DVT potentially can be serious and you should get medical help urgently if you think you have a DVT. Ultrasound is being used to confirm or exclude the presence of DVT in thigh, calf, arm, forearm or in other deep veins like portal vein in your liver. In some cases, DVT can be asymptomatic. The common symptoms of DVT are as below:
The preferred test for the diagnosis of acute DVT is Complete Doppler (duplex) ultrasound (CDUS). The opinion of the National Blood Clot Alliance is that, an ultrasound finds about 95 percent of DVTs in the large veins above the knee. Usually, no other test is required if a clot is identified through ultrasound. Ultrasound identifies only about 60 to 70 percent of DVTs in calf veins.
The DVT scan includes evaluation of the deep veins and superficial (under the skin veins) and junction between deep and superficial veins.

Our Ultrasound Specialists will explain the procedure before your scan. You will be provided with a gown to respect your dignity, and you will be guided to lie down on your back. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your skin. Our specialist will move the probe on your affected body part to produce diagnostic ultrasound images. You will not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. A DVT ultrasound scan is regularly completed within 20-30 minutes. Our sonographer will recommend the best course of action depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
In some cases, if we find DVT in your vein, we will recommend a relevant blood test.
You will receive your results verbally or written after the scan. However, the Sonographer will examine the relevant images after your appointment and prepare a written report urgently or within 24 hours with any recommended actions. The report will be sent to you so that you can share the findings with your doctor, if required.
There are no risks or side effects associated with the DVT ultrasound scan. Ultrasound does not use any radiation, which is why doctors prefer to use them to check on developing babies in pregnant women.
