Anomaly/Anatomy Scan

Pregnancy Anomaly/anatomy scan (18-20 Weeks)

At London Private Ultrasound, we offer a comprehensive Anatomy Scan of your baby, which is one of the two scans that are routinely offered to all pregnant women as part of antenatal scans in UK. This scan aims to perform a full survey of baby’s structures, by assessing baby’s growth by this stage of development, as well as many structures and organs: baby’s head, brain, face, spine, kidneys, stomach, bladder, diaphragm, bowel, abdominal wall, umbilical cord, arms, legs, hands, feet and heart views. We also look at the overall fluid around your baby and assess placental lie to make sure placenta is not in the way of the birth canal. A complementary gender reveal will be offered at your wish.

More Information

This is usually the second scan in most women’s pregnancies, routinely offered in your local NHS hospital across UK. NHS services are great, and we are also happy to provide this type of scan for you and your baby. It is essential at this stage to:
  • Perform a detailed anatomy survey for your baby, as the 11 of the major abnormalities recommended by NHS Fetal Anomaly Screening Program (FASP) would be identifiable at this stage:
  1. Edward’s syndrome (T18)
  2. Patau’s syndrome (T13)
  3. anencephaly
  4. spina bifida
  5. cleft lip
  6. congenital diaphragmatic hernia
  7. gastroschisis
  8. exomphalos
  9. congenital heart disease
  10. bilateral renal agenesis
  11. lethal skeletal dysplasia
  • Identify any incidental findings that may impact the mode of delivery and improve antenatal care (e.g. identify and describe location and size of fibroids)
  • Assess placental lie, to ensure it is not covering or lying too close to the birth canal
  • Assess the fluid around your baby
You may or may not also find yourself benefiting from having this scan done with us in view of:
  • Being unable to obtain a suitable appointment time due to travel or hospital cancelations
  • Wishing to clarify or double check previous findings
  • Feeling like you may have been rushed through your appointment due to unforeseen circumstances
  • Not being offered more appointments in view of unfavourable baby position, and scan could not be completed with your local NHS Antenatal Care Provider
  • Did not manage to arrange antenatal care yet, and concerned you may miss the window of opportunity to have this scan performed within recommended timeframe
  • You will be asked a series of questions related to your estimated date of deliver (EDD) or assisted conception dates and symptoms you are presenting with
  • Perform the Ultrasound scan and take high quality representative images
  • Explain ultrasound findings and answer your questions or concerns within our scope of practice
  • Issue a hard copy of the report at the end of the scan, as well as issue a digital copy of the report within 24 hrs, containing relevant images for you to keep for your records, or take to your GP and / or antenatal care provider
  • Recommend a follow-up ultrasound scan if necessary
  • Offer GP or specialist referral and a Blood Test if deemed necessary
The most common finding at this stage is a normally developing baby with normal appearances for this stage of the pregnancy. On a rare occasion, structural abnormalities could be identified in which case you will be notified and advised to be referred to a tertiary centre for further evaluation. NHS Fetal Anomaly Screening Program (FASP) recommends to aim at identifying the following 11 abnormalities: For more information, please refer to https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fetal-anomaly-screening-programme-overview
There is no need for a blood test to accompany an Anatomy Ultrasound Scan.
Anatomy Scan is performed transabdominally (on top of your tummy), for which we advise to have a nearly empty bladder.
The Ultrasound Specialist will explain the procedure before your scan. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your tummy, so that the specialist will be able to produce high quality diagnostic ultrasound images and assess your baby. You should not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. The Detailed Anatomy Ultrasound Scan is regularly completed within 30 minutes, depending on the position of your baby. Our Sonographer will recommend the best course of action depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
You will get the results of the scan after the examination along with a hard copy of the report. We will also email you a digital copy of the report with relevant images within 24 hrs.
Ultrasound scan itself does not harm the pregnancy. Yours and your baby’s safety is one of our top priorities, therefore we strictly adhere to BMUS guidelines for the safe use of Diagnostic Ultrasound Equipment and scanning times, as well as respect ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
Given an uneventful pregnancy, we recommend a Wellbeing Scan at 32 weeks to check the growth of your baby. If however you are concerned, we recommend serial wellbeing scans at 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks to check the growth of your baby.

Fantastic ultrasound centre, the sonographer Ashleigh Austin was very knowledgeable and kind. The cost is half of that of Harley Street too. I had a query and she called me immediately to respond to my concerns. Highly recommended
