Anomaly/Anatomy Scan
Pregnancy Anomaly/anatomy scan (18-20 Weeks)
At London Private Ultrasound, we offer a comprehensive Anatomy Scan of your baby, which is one of the two scans that are routinely offered to all pregnant women as part of antenatal scans in UK. This scan aims to perform a full survey of baby’s structures, by assessing baby’s growth by this stage of development, as well as many structures and organs: baby’s head, brain, face, spine, kidneys, stomach, bladder, diaphragm, bowel, abdominal wall, umbilical cord, arms, legs, hands, feet and heart views. We also look at the overall fluid around your baby and assess placental lie to make sure placenta is not in the way of the birth canal. A complementary gender reveal will be offered at your wish.

More Information |
This is usually the second scan in most women’s pregnancies, routinely offered in your local NHS hospital across UK. NHS services are great, and we are also happy to provide this type of scan for you and your baby.
It is essential at this stage to:
The most common finding at this stage is a normally developing baby with normal appearances for this stage of the pregnancy. On a rare occasion, structural abnormalities could be identified in which case you will be notified and advised to be referred to a tertiary centre for further evaluation. NHS Fetal Anomaly Screening Program (FASP) recommends to aim at identifying the following 11 abnormalities:
There is no need for a blood test to accompany an Anatomy Ultrasound Scan.
Anatomy Scan is performed transabdominally (on top of your tummy), for which we advise to have a nearly empty bladder.
The Ultrasound Specialist will explain the procedure before your scan. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your tummy, so that the specialist will be able to produce high quality diagnostic ultrasound images and assess your baby. You should not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. The Detailed Anatomy Ultrasound Scan is regularly completed within 30 minutes, depending on the position of your baby. Our Sonographer will recommend the best course of action depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
You will get the results of the scan after the examination along with a hard copy of the report. We will also email you a digital copy of the report with relevant images within 24 hrs.
Ultrasound scan itself does not harm the pregnancy. Yours and your baby’s safety is one of our top priorities, therefore we strictly adhere to BMUS guidelines for the safe use of Diagnostic Ultrasound Equipment and scanning times, as well as respect ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
Given an uneventful pregnancy, we recommend a Wellbeing Scan at 32 weeks to check the growth of your baby. If however you are concerned, we recommend serial wellbeing scans at 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks to check the growth of your baby.
