What the Blood and Urine Tests Check

Your samples are checked at the laboratory. These are the areas they cover, and your GP reads every result alongside your examination, ECG and history.

  • Liver function

Shows whether your liver is inflamed or under strain, for example from alcohol, medicines or fatty liver.

  • Kidney function

Checks how well your kidneys filter waste. High blood pressure and diabetes both affect them.

  • Cholesterol profile

Your cholesterol levels feed into your QRISK heart score and show whether you need to act.

  • Blood sugar and diabetes risk

Finds raised blood sugar and prediabetes, which usually cause no symptoms for years.

  • Thyroid function

An underactive or overactive thyroid can cause tiredness, weight change and low mood.

  • Mineral levels

Minerals your nerves, muscles and bones depend on. Low or high levels can explain cramps or fatigue.

  • Infection and inflammation

Signs of hidden infection or inflammation, which your GP reads alongside your symptoms.

  • Urine test

Looks for protein, sugar, blood or infection: early signs of kidney, diabetes or urinary problems.

Is it for you?

Who Benefits From a Full Body Women’s Health MOT?

Most of what a women’s health MOT finds has no symptoms at first. A health check for women is a good idea if any of these sound like you.

  • Women aged 40 and over, when heart, diabetes and thyroid problems become more common
  • Going through perimenopause or menopause, when heart and cholesterol risk rises
  • A family history of early heart disease, stroke, diabetes or thyroid disease
  • Borderline blood pressure or cholesterol, or never had them checked
  • Tired, low in energy or sleeping badly with no clear cause
  • No check-up in years, or under 40 and wanting a baseline

Do not wait for a health check if you have chest pain, sudden breathlessness or signs of a stroke such as a drooping face, arm weakness or slurred speech: call 999. See a GP promptly for a new breast lump, bleeding after the menopause, blood in your urine or weight loss you cannot explain.

Which check is right for you?

Women’s Health MOT or Women’s Health Scan: Who Should Choose Which?

A women’s health assessment and a women’s health scan answer different questions, and both are part of private women’s health screening in London. Start from what you want to know.

  • Women’s Health MOT · £495

Choose the MOT if you want to know…

    • Your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
    • Your 10-year heart and stroke risk
    • How your liver, kidneys and thyroid are working
    • Why you feel tired, low or are sleeping badly
    • What to change, from a GP who has seen everything
  • Women’s Wellness Ultrasound · £595

Choose the women’s health scan if you have…

    • A breast or armpit lump, pain or thickening
    • Pelvic pain, bloating or irregular bleeding
    • Known fibroids or ovarian cysts to check on
    • A neck lump or a thyroid nodule
    • A wish for a baseline scan of these areas
  • Women’s Health Check Premium · £1,795

    Choose Premium if you want…

    • Your organs, breasts, womb and ovaries scanned
    • Your heart checked by a consultant cardiologist
    • 30+ blood markers
    • A family history of heart disease or cancer looked at in depth
    • Everything reviewed together by a GP

None of these replace your NHS cervical screening (smear test) or breast screening (mammogram): keep going when you are invited.

How to Prepare for Your Women’s Health MOT

Your blood test includes cholesterol and blood sugar, which can need fasting, so we confirm when you book. If you are asked to fast, have only water from the night before. Keep taking your usual medicines, wear a top that is easy to remove for the examination and ECG, and bring a list of your medicines and any recent results. Booking the Wellness Ultrasound or Premium? Drink one litre of water an hour before so your bladder is comfortably full for the pelvic scan.

Questions

Women’s Health MOT: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a full health MOT cost?

At London Private Ultrasound the Women’s Health MOT costs £495 all-inclusive. The Women’s Wellness Ultrasound (breast, pelvic and thyroid scans) is £595, and the Women’s Health Check Premium is £1,795. Private women’s health checks in London usually cost from about £495 to over £1,000.

Is it worth getting a health MOT?

For most women over 40, during the menopause, or with heart disease or diabetes in the family, yes. High blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and thyroid problems often cause no clear symptoms, so a check finds them while simple changes still work. If you feel unwell now, see a doctor first.

Can I get a health MOT on the NHS?

Partly. If you are 40 to 74 with no heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or high blood pressure, the free NHS Health Check checks blood pressure, cholesterol and heart risk every five years. You are also invited for cervical and breast screening. A private MOT is available at any age and goes further.

What does a health MOT involve?

You spend 60 minutes with a private GP, who goes through your health, family history, lifestyle, periods or menopause, then examines you from head to toe. You have a resting 12-lead ECG, your QRISK heart score, and blood and urine samples, followed by a written report and a GP call.

Is a women’s health MOT the same as a well woman check?

Yes. A women’s health MOT, a well woman check, a female health assessment and a women’s health check up describe the same kind of check: a doctor’s review of your overall health with tests. Ours is a GP appointment with an examination, ECG, blood and urine tests.

What blood tests are in a women’s health MOT?

The blood panel checks liver and kidney function, your cholesterol profile, blood sugar and diabetes risk, thyroid function, key minerals, and markers of infection and inflammation. A urine test adds kidney, sugar and infection markers. Your GP explains every result in your written report and follow-up call.

Does the Women’s Health MOT test hormones or the menopause?

Your thyroid is checked as part of the blood panel. Menopause is usually diagnosed from your age and symptoms rather than a blood test, so tell your GP about any menopause symptoms or irregular periods during the MOT. They will advise on next steps, including any hormone tests that would help.

Does the Women’s Health MOT include a scan?

The Women’s Health MOT is a doctor-led check with an examination, ECG and laboratory tests. For scans, the Women’s Wellness Ultrasound covers your breasts and armpits, pelvis and thyroid for £595, and the Women’s Health Check Premium brings a full body scan, heart check and bloods together. You can book all three here.

Does a women’s health check replace cervical or breast screening?

No. Keep going to your NHS cervical screening (smear test) and breast screening (mammogram) when invited, as breast ultrasound works alongside a mammogram rather than replacing it. See a GP promptly about any breast lump or unusual bleeding.

Is a health check worth it for women under 40?

It can be, especially with a family history of heart disease, diabetes or thyroid problems, ongoing tiredness, or if you have not had a check-up in years. The NHS Health Check starts at 40, so a private MOT is the simplest way to get a full baseline earlier.

Do I need a GP referral for a women’s health check?

No. You can book the Women’s Health MOT, Wellness Ultrasound or Premium check directly online, by phone or on WhatsApp, with no referral from your NHS GP. You receive your own written report, which you can share with your NHS GP or a specialist.

How long do the results of a women’s health MOT take?

Your GP talks you through the examination and ECG during the appointment. Your blood and urine samples go to the laboratory, and your written report and follow-up GP call usually come within 3 to 5 working days. If anything needs attention sooner, your GP contacts you straight away.

Do I need to fast before a women’s health MOT?

Your blood test includes cholesterol and blood sugar, which can need fasting, so we confirm when you book. If asked, have only water from the night before. For the Wellness Ultrasound or Premium, drink one litre of water an hour before so your bladder is full.

Can I ask for a female clinician or a chaperone?

Yes. Tell us when you book, in the booking notes, by phone or on WhatsApp, and we will confirm who is available on your chosen day and clinic. You can also ask for a chaperone for any examination, and you can stop at any time.

What happens if my health check finds a problem?

Your GP explains what the result means and what to do next, in your report and follow-up call. If you need a scan, a specialist or treatment, we arrange the referral at no extra charge, and you only pay for the specialist appointment itself.

Where can I get a women’s health check near me in London?

At our Central London clinic, 27 Welbeck Street in the Harley Street medical district, or at 54–56 Victoria Street in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Both are open 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, and same-day or next-day appointments are often available.

Medical disclaimer. This page is general information and does not replace individual medical advice. A health MOT checks for common problems; normal results do not rule out every condition, and some women need further tests, a scan or a specialist review. Call 999 for chest pain, sudden breathlessness or signs of a stroke.
