What sports injury ultrasound diagnoses

Sports injuries usually involve muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, bursa, or soft tissue structures. Ultrasound helps identify exactly which tissue is injured and whether physiotherapy, injection therapy, MRI, or specialist referral is needed.

Muscle & tendon injuries

  • Muscle tearsUltrasound assesses the location, length of fibre disruption, haematoma and connective tissue involvement, supporting return-to-sport planning.
  • TendinopathyChronic tendon pain from degenerative change, thickening, hypoechogenicity and Doppler vascularity.
  • Partial tendon tearFocal disruption of tendon fibres without full discontinuity; ultrasound estimates tear size and percentage involvement.
  • Complete tendon ruptureFull-thickness discontinuity requiring urgent assessment, especially Achilles, quadriceps, distal biceps and major rotator cuff tears.

Ligament, joint & other injuries

  • Ligament sprainAssessment of ligament thickening, disruption, fluid and dynamic instability where appropriate.
  • Joint effusionFluid in a joint after trauma or overuse; aspiration can be planned if clinically suitable.
  • BursitisInflamed bursa around shoulder, hip, knee or ankle; ultrasound helps guide accurate injection if needed.
  • Dynamic instabilitySnapping, subluxation or movement-related symptoms that may not be visible on static MRI.

Ultrasound vs MRI for Sports Injuries

For most soft tissue sports injuries, ultrasound is an excellent first-line test because it is fast, dynamic, accessible, and can guide treatment at the same appointment. MRI remains useful for deeper structures, bone marrow pathology, complex joint injuries, and surgical planning.

Ultrasound

  • Same-day access
  • Dynamic movement assessment
  • Doppler vascularity
  • Guided injection planning
  • Lower cost than MRI

MRI

  • Bone marrow and stress injury
  • Meniscus and cartilage
  • Complex deep structures
  • Pre-surgical mapping
  • When ultrasound is inconclusive

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about private sports injury ultrasound at London Private Ultrasound.

What is a Sports Injury Ultrasound?

A sports injury ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues. It is especially useful for soft tissue injuries because the specialist can examine the area dynamically while you move.

How much does a private sports injury ultrasound cost?

One area costs £199 and two areas cost £299. The price includes same-day verbal results and a written report within 24 hours.

Is ultrasound or MRI better for sports injuries?

Ultrasound is usually first line for tendon, muscle, ligament and bursal injuries because it is dynamic, fast, and can guide injections. MRI is better for suspected stress fracture, cartilage, meniscus, deep structures and complex surgical planning.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly online or call 020 7101 3377.

Can ultrasound guide sports injury injections?

Yes. Ultrasound can guide PRP, corticosteroid injections, joint aspiration or bursal injections precisely, depending on the diagnosis and clinical suitability.
