Private Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

Expert-led pelvic health assessment with same-day results in our CQC-registered Central London Clinic. No GP referral needed.

A Private Pelvic Ultrasound Scan is a quick, safe, and non-invasive diagnostic test that provides detailed images of the uterus, ovaries, endometrium, fallopian tubes, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is commonly recommended for symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, irregular periods, fertility concerns, or urinary problems and helps detect conditions like ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometrial abnormalities, and other pelvic disorders. Early diagnosis with ultrasound allows accurate assessment without radiation and provides immediate clinical guidance.

At London Private Ultrasound, all pelvic scans are performed by highly qualified specialist sonographers using advanced high-resolution ultrasound equipment. Both transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds are performed when appropriate to ensure the most accurate results. We offer same-day appointments, same-day reports, no GP referral required, and a fully tailored assessment in a professional and comfortable clinical environment, helping you gain fast answers and complete peace of mind.

About Our Private Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

Leading Specialists. Advanced Imaging. Results You Can Trust.

London Private Ultrasound is one of the UK’s most trusted clinics for private pelvic ultrasound scans in London, performed by expert sonographers. Our pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless examination that provides crucial insights into a range of concerns. Whether you're seeking answers to specific symptoms, a general wellness check or fertility insights, our scans are tailored to your needs.

What a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan Can Show

  • Uterus: Size, shape, fibroids, or structural abnormalities

  • Ovaries: Cysts, polycystic appearance (PCOS), or other masses

  • Endometrium (womb lining): Thickness, irregularities, or polyps

  • Fallopian tubes: Fluid or inflammation where visible

  • Bladder: Wall thickness, incomplete emptying, or internal masses

  • Cervix & soft tissues: Supporting structures around the uterus and ovaries

These detailed images help identify causes of pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, fertility problems, or post-menopausal symptoms.

Types of Pelvic Ultrasound Scans

We offer two complementary scan types. Your consultant will recommend one or both depending on your symptoms and anatomy.

  • Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound (across the abdomen):
Performed over the tummy using an external probe and gel, this provides a wide overview of the pelvic organs, particularly the bladder and uterus. A full bladder is required.

  • Transvaginal Pelvic Ultrasound (internal scan, with consent):
Offers a closer, high-resolution view of the uterus, ovaries, and endometrium using a slim internal probe. It provides clearer detail and is especially useful for fertility, irregular bleeding, or pelvic pain assessments. Performed only with your consent.

Specialised Pelvic Ultrasound Scans

For more detailed assessments, we also offer:

3D Pelvic Scans: Providing three-dimensional views for enhanced assessment of certain conditions, like uterine abnormalities.

Fertility Scans: Including follicular tracking (monitoring ovarian follicle development) and endometrial lining thickness assessments, which are crucial for women undergoing fertility treatments or investigations.

  • Endometriosis: Detects endometriomas (chocolate cysts) and guides further investigation if needed.

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Shows thickened or fluid-filled fallopian tubes linked to infection.

Comprehensive Women's Pelvic Ultrasound FAQs

What does a private pelvic ultrasound scan show?

A private pelvic ultrasound scan produces detailed, real-time images of the female reproductive organs including uterus (endometrial lining), ovaries, fallopian tubes and bladder. It can identify a wide range of conditions including fibroids, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, and signs of pelvic inflammatory disease. It can also confirm the correct location of an intrauterine device (IUD/coil) and detect early pregnancy. At London Private Ultrasound, both transabdominal and transvaginal imaging are used to provide the most complete and accurate diagnostic assessment.

What is a private pelvic ultrasound in London?

A private pelvic ultrasound scan in London is a diagnostic scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed, real-time images of the pelvic organs (lower abdomen), including the uterus, endometrial lining, ovaries, cervix, and bladder. It is sometimes called a gynaecological ultrasound. It can be booked without a GP referral, allowing fast access to expert assessment. At London Private Ultrasound, scans are performed by experienced sonographers using advanced imaging techniques for accurate, same-day evaluation.

How much does a private pelvic ultrasound cost?

The cost of a private pelvic ultrasound scan at London Private Ultrasound is £219. Our pricing is transparent with no hidden fees, and every scan includes a detailed assessment and formal diagnostic report. Private scans offer faster access, expert interpretation, and immediate reassurance.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect ovarian cysts, fibroids, and PCOS?

Yes. Pelvic ultrasound is the primary imaging method for diagnosing ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Cysts are assessed by size and appearance, fibroids are measured and mapped within the uterus, and PCOS is evaluated using follicle count and ovarian volume in line with diagnostic criteria. It is also the first-line investigation for many gynaecological conditions.

When should I book a pelvic ultrasound scan?

You should consider booking a pelvic ultrasound if you experience heavy, irregular, or painful periods; bleeding between periods or after sex; post-menopausal bleeding; persistent pelvic pain; bloating or pelvic pressure; or difficulty conceiving. It is also recommended if you have been told you may have fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or PCOS. You can self-refer without waiting for a GP appointment.

Do I need a GP referral for a private pelvic scan in London?

No. You do not need a GP referral to book a private pelvic ultrasound. You can self-refer and book directly online or by phone. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available. If you have previous reports, bringing them can help tailor your assessment.

How do I prepare for a pelvic ultrasound scan?

Preparation depends on the scan type. For a transabdominal scan, drink approximately one litre of water one hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder, as this improves image quality. For a transvaginal scan, no preparation is needed and an empty bladder is preferred. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.

Is a pelvic ultrasound scan painful?

No. A pelvic ultrasound is not painful. The transabdominal scan involves gentle pressure on the lower abdomen. The transvaginal scan uses a slim probe, which may cause mild pressure but should not be painful. You remain in control throughout, and the procedure can be stopped at any time.

Do I have to have the internal (transvaginal) scan?

No. A transvaginal scan is optional and only performed with your full consent. While it provides more detailed images of the uterus and ovaries, you can choose a transabdominal-only scan. Your preferences will always be respected.

When will I get my pelvic scan results?

Your sonographer will explain the findings immediately after your scan, so you leave with a clear understanding of the results. A written diagnostic report is also provided, suitable for sharing with your GP or specialist.

Is a pelvic ultrasound safe? Does it use radiation? what are the risks?

Yes. Pelvic ultrasound is completely safe and does not use radiation. It relies on sound waves and has no known risks or side effects. It is suitable for women of all ages, including during pregnancy. An ultrasound scan is a very safe procedure and there are usually no side effects.

Can I have a pelvic scan while on my period?

Yes. You can have a pelvic ultrasound during your period, and in some cases it is clinically helpful, e.g. when investigating the cause of heavy bleeding or assessing the endometrium at a specific point in the cycle. There is no need to delay your appointment.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect cancer?

Yes, a pelvic ultrasound can detect signs of cancer, particularly ovarian and uterine cancers, by identifying abnormal findings such as masses, cysts or structural changes that may require further investigation. However, it cannot definitively diagnose cancer. If needed, additional tests such as follow-ups and biopsies will be recommended. It is an essential first-line tool for early detection.

Is a pelvic ultrasound accurate for assessing pelvic organs?

Yes. Pelvic ultrasound is highly accurate, particularly when both transabdominal and transvaginal imaging are used. It is the first-line diagnostic tool for most gynaecological conditions and provides reliable, real-time assessment.

Do you accept insurance or offer payment plans?

We accept various payment methods, including major credit cards, cash and Klarna. For insurance payment we can provide you with an invoice/receipt so you can claim the money back from your insurance provider.
