What happens during your appointment?
The scan is quick, non-invasive and usually includes abdominal, urinary tract and scrotal/testicular ultrasound views.
Fast and arrive with a full bladder
Fast for 4–6 hours before your appointment and finish drinking one litre of water one hour before the scan so the bladder is comfortably full.
Abdominal, urinary and testicular ultrasound
Water-based gel is used. The Abdominal and lower Abdominal are scanned first, followed by the scrotal/testicular assessment with privacy and dignity maintained throughout.
Verbal findings and written report
Findings are usually explained verbally during or after the scan. A written report with relevant images is normally prepared after review or within 24 hours.
How to prepare
Correct preparation improves abdominal and bladder views.
- Fast for at least 4–6 hours before the appointment
- Avoid tea, coffee and porridge during the fasting period
- Finish drinking one litre of water one hour before your appointment
- Attend with a comfortably full bladder
- If you have diabetes, eat and drink as usual
- Take your regular medication on time unless advised otherwise
