At a glance
Peripheral nerve ultrasound at LPU
A non-invasive scan that looks at nerve structure and the surrounding soft tissues. It can support assessment of common entrapments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, meralgia paraesthetica and sciatic nerve compression.
Upper limb assessment covers median, ulnar and radial nerves.
Lower limb assessment covers common peroneal, saphenous, tibial and lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh.
Sciatic assessment focuses on the sciatic nerve through the buttock and thigh.
Full assessment covers major peripheral nerves bilaterally in a 60-minute appointment.

Clear tiers make it easier to book the right scan without overpaying for an unnecessary full assessment.
Upper Limb Nerve Assessment
Median, ulnar and radial nerves through common compression sites, including wrist, elbow and forearm regions.
Targeted assessment of the sciatic nerve along the buttock and thigh, including suspected piriformis-related compression or post-injection nerve symptoms.
Comprehensive 60-minute bilateral assessment of major peripheral nerves, including upper limb, lower limb and sciatic regions where clinically indicated.
All options include a verbal explanation in the scan room and a written report within 24 hours.

Important: this service is diagnostic ultrasound only. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and EMG are not available at LPU.
What it can show
Structural nerve and soft-tissue findings
Nerve enlargement at specific compression points.
Compression by surrounding soft tissues, masses or fluid.
Nerve displacement, subluxation or anatomical variation.
Peripheral nerve masses such as schwannoma, neurofibroma or neuroma.
Trauma, discontinuity or post-operative/post-injection change where visible.
Limitations
What it cannot replace
Nerve ultrasound shows structure, not function. It cannot measure how well a nerve conducts signals, and it cannot replace specialist neurology assessment for complex or central nervous system symptoms.
NCS / EMG: where nerve function testing would add value, the report can recommend discussion with your GP or specialist.
When to consider
Common reasons to book
Book the anatomical region that best matches the symptoms. The clinician will advise if a different scope is more appropriate.
Carpal tunnel symptoms
Tingling or numbness in thumb, index, middle and half of ring finger, often worse at night.
Ulnar neuropathy
Little/ring finger tingling, grip weakness or symptoms worse with elbow flexion.
Tarsal tunnel symptoms
Burning, tingling or numbness in the sole or arch of the foot.
Meralgia paraesthetica
Outer thigh burning or numbness related to lateral cutaneous nerve compression.
Foot drop
Weakness lifting the foot with sensory change over the outer shin or top of foot.
Sciatic symptoms
Buttock and posterior thigh symptoms, including suspected piriformis-related compression.
Nerve lump
A lump along a nerve, especially with shooting pain, tingling or local tenderness.
Multi-region symptoms
More than one limb or unclear distribution where a fuller structural assessment is preferred.
Evidence base
Evidence strength varies by indication
The page is written honestly: some indications are well established, while others are best considered an adjunct to clinical assessment and other tests.
1
Strong evidence
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the best-established uses of peripheral nerve ultrasound.
2
Established uses
Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, peripheral nerve masses and meralgia paraesthetica are commonly assessed structurally.
3
Adjunctive / selective
Tarsal tunnel, Guyon canal, fibular head compression and complex neuropathies may require NCS, EMG or specialist assessment.
Process
From booking to report
A straightforward appointment pathway designed for direct-access private imaging.
