How it works
1 · Choose & book
Pick your scan and book online, by phone or WhatsApp. No GP referral needed.
2 · Visit a clinic
Attend our Central London or St Albans clinic, 7 days a week.
3 · Your scan
An experienced consultant or sonographer performs your scan.
4 · Results
We explain the findings in the scan room, then send your written report within 24 hours.
What happens during your scan
A clear, honest walk-through of what to expect, so you can arrive prepared and at ease. The exact steps vary by scan type — your sonographer will explain everything before they begin and you can ask questions at any point.
1 · Arrival & welcome
You’re greeted by our reception team, shown to a private waiting area, and given any preparation guidance specific to your scan. If you’d like a chaperone, just ask — one is always available.
2 · A short clinical chat
Your ultrasound consultant or sonographer asks about your symptoms, any relevant history and what you’d like the scan to focus on. They confirm the scan you’ve booked and explain how it will be performed.
3 · Preparing for the scan
You’re shown to a private scan room and given a moment of privacy to undress only the area being examined, with a gown or sheet for comfort.
4 · The ultrasound itself
A small amount of warm gel is applied to the skin. The probe glides gently over the area while real-time images appear on the screen. It is not painful, there is no radiation, and most scans take 15–40 minutes.
5 · Explanation in the scan room
Your sonographer explains what they have seen verbally, in the scan room, while you’re with them — so you leave with a clear understanding. You can ask anything you like.
6 · Your written report in 24 hours
Your full written report follows within 24 hours, securely delivered and suitable for sharing with your GP, specialist or insurer.
Comfort and dignity: a chaperone is available on request, female sonographers can be requested for intimate scans, and you can pause or stop the scan at any time. If you have specific access needs, please call 020 7101 3377 when you book.
Private vs NHS imaging
Why many patients choose private ultrasound for faster access and continuity of care.
| London Private Ultrasound | Typical NHS pathway | |
|---|---|---|
| Referral | Not required — self-refer | GP referral usually required |
| Waiting time | Same-day / next-day | Often weeks for routine imaging |
| Appointment choice | 7 days a week, you choose | Allocated, limited choice |
| Results explained | Verbally in the scan room, same visit | Often by letter or follow-up |
| Written report | Within 24 hours | Variable |
| Continuity of care | One consultant from start to report | Multiple touchpoints |
The NHS provides excellent care; private imaging is an option for faster access and convenience. This comparison reflects typical pathways and may vary.
