The scan is suitable for adults with a new groin lump, persistent discomfort, swelling, bruising or symptoms following sport or physical activity.

Common causes of a groin lump or pain
Ultrasound can help distinguish between several common groin conditions and guide the most appropriate next step.
Inguinal or Femoral Hernia
Dynamic assessment for a protrusion through the groin or femoral canal, including size and behaviour where visible.
Adductor Injury
Assessment of visible adductor muscles and tendons for strain, tear or localised fluid change.
Athletic Pubalgia
Ultrasound may contribute to assessment of sports-related groin pain, although MRI or specialist review may also be required.
Lymph Node Abnormality
Review of enlarged nodes for size, shape, internal structure and vascular pattern.
Soft-Tissue Lump
Assessment of visible cystic, fatty, inflammatory or other superficial soft-tissue abnormalities.
Vascular Concern
Assessment of relevant femoral vessels with Doppler when clinically appropriate; a dedicated vascular scan may be recommended.

How to prepare

Choose clothing that allows easy access to the symptomatic groin while maintaining your comfort and dignity.
Identify the symptomatic area
Be ready to show exactly where the lump, pain, bruising or swelling is most noticeable.
Bring relevant information
Bring previous imaging, surgical information or specialist letters when available.
Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms
Attend urgent care or A&E for a suddenly painful non-reducible groin lump, vomiting, abdominal swelling, fever, skin colour change, inability to pass stool or wind, severe leg swelling, or sudden severe testicular pain. These symptoms should not wait for a routine private scan.
