Please note: this is general information to help you choose a scan, not a diagnosis or medical advice. The right scan depends on your individual circumstances. For severe, sudden, or worsening symptoms (such as a suspected fracture, inability to bear weight, or sudden loss of sensation), seek urgent medical care or call 999 immediately. This guidance is clinically reviewed by Mr Paul Watson (Lead MSK Consultant Clinician · HCPC registered).
How it works
1 · Choose & book
Pick your joint/scan and book online, by phone or WhatsApp. No GP referral is needed.
2 · Pre-scan conversation
Before the scan begins, a short conversation confirms the scan booked is the right one to accurately assess your specific injury or pain.
3 · Visit a clinic
Attend our Central London or St Albans clinic. Same-day appointments are often available so you can start recovery sooner.
4 · Your scan
Performed by a highly experienced MSK Ultrasound Consultant or Specialist.
5 · Results in the scan room
We explain the MSK findings verbally at the time, with the comprehensive written report sent within 24 hours.
6 · Personalised recommendations
Based on findings, the clinician explains what they mean for you and gives clear recommendations for onward care with your physiotherapist or an orthopaedic specialist.
What happens during your scan
A clear, honest walk-through of what to expect during an MSK ultrasound, so you can arrive prepared and at ease.
1 · Arrival & welcome
You’re greeted by our reception team and given any preparation guidance. If you’d like a chaperone, just ask — one is always available.
2 · A short clinical chat
Your MSK specialist asks about your injury, exactly where it hurts, and your mobility to tailor the dynamic assessment precisely to your needs.
3 · Preparing for the scan
You’re shown to a private scan room. You will need to expose the joint being scanned. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing (like shorts or a vest) to make this easy.
4 · The ultrasound itself
Warm gel is applied to the skin. The probe glides over the joint. The specialist may ask you to move your arm or leg during the scan — this is a “dynamic assessment” to see how the tendons and muscles behave in motion.
5 · Explanation in the scan room
Your specialist explains what they have found verbally, in the scan room, so you leave with a clear understanding of the injury.
6 · Your written report in 24 hours
Your full written report follows within 24 hours, containing detailed structural findings perfectly formatted to guide your physiotherapist or GP.
Comfort and dignity: a chaperone is available on request, and you can pause or stop the scan at any time. If you have specific mobility or access needs, please call 020 7101 3377 when you book.
Private vs NHS MSK imaging
Why many athletes and patients choose private MSK imaging to bypass long waiting lists and accelerate their recovery.
| London Private Ultrasound | Typical NHS pathway | |
|---|---|---|
| Referral | Not required — self-refer directly | GP or MSK triage referral required |
| Waiting time | Same-day / next-day availability | Often several weeks to months for routine ultrasound |
| Impact on recovery | Immediate diagnosis allows physio to start right away | Delayed imaging can delay targeted rehabilitation |
| Dynamic Assessment | Movement-based scanning included as standard | Varies by hospital/clinic resources |
| Written report | Within 24 hours | Added to notes; may wait for follow-up appointment |
The NHS provides excellent orthopaedic care. Private imaging is an option for much faster access, enabling you to get a definitive answer and start targeted physiotherapy or treatment without delay.
