What to Expect

Your Consultation Step by Step

A structured 30–45 minute appointment from arrival to clear treatment plan. The focus is on understanding your specific situation in detail and giving you a confident, personalised next step.

0–10Min

Welcome & Detailed Clinical History

Your consultant takes a full history — symptom onset and timeline, mechanism of injury or pattern of deterioration, prior treatment attempts, occupation, sport, and how the condition affects your daily life and goals.

10–25Min

Physical Examination

Comprehensive orthopaedic examination — inspection, palpation, range of movement testing, neurovascular assessment, muscle strength testing, and provocative special tests specific to your suspected diagnosis.

25–35Min

Imaging Review & Working Diagnosis

Any prior imaging or correspondence you bring is reviewed in detail. Your consultant explains the working diagnosis in plain language — what it is, why it has happened, and what the natural history is likely to be without intervention.

35–45Min

Personalised Treatment Plan

The plan is discussed in full — covering self-management, physiotherapy referral, injection therapy, surgical opinion, and any further imaging needed. You leave with a clear next step. The written report follows by email the same day or within 24 hours.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the £199 Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment at London Private Ultrasound.

What is the Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment?

The Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment is a 30–45 minute one-to-one appointment with a consultant MSK clinician. It includes:

  • Full clinical history covering symptoms, prior treatment, and functional impact
  • Comprehensive physical examination — range of movement, special tests, neurovascular assessment
  • Review of any prior imaging (ultrasound, MRI, X-ray) or clinical correspondence you bring
  • Working diagnosis explained in plain language
  • Personalised treatment plan covering self-management, physiotherapy, injection, or surgical opinion
  • Same-day verbal explanation and written report within 24 hours
  • NHS referral letter where surgical opinion is required, at no additional charge

The fee is £199 all-inclusive.

How much does the Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment cost?

The Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment costs £199 all-inclusive. This includes:

  • The 30–45 minute consultation with a consultant MSK clinician
  • Full clinical history and physical examination
  • Diagnosis and personalised management plan
  • Same-day verbal explanation
  • Written report within 24 hours
  • NHS referral letter where required (no additional charge)

If diagnostic ultrasound is needed during the appointment, this can usually be added — but most patients booking the standalone consultation already have recent imaging. If you don’t yet have imaging, the combined £399 package is more cost-effective and saves a return visit.

When should I book a Consultant Assessment instead of the combined package?

The choice depends on whether you already have imaging:

  • Book the £199 Consultation if: you already have recent diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, MRI, or X-ray within the last 3–6 months) that you can share with the consultant; you want a second opinion on a known diagnosis; you need consultant opinion on whether to proceed with surgery; you’ve had injection therapy and want to discuss next options
  • Book the £399 combined package if: you have an undiagnosed problem and need both imaging and consultant opinion together; you want the most efficient single-visit pathway; you might want injection therapy at the same visit

If you’re unsure, call 020 7101 3377 and our team will advise based on your specific situation.

What happens during the appointment?

The appointment follows a structured format:

  • Minutes 0–10: Detailed clinical history — symptom timeline, mechanism, prior treatment, functional impact
  • Minutes 10–25: Comprehensive physical examination — inspection, palpation, range of movement, special tests, neurovascular assessment, provocative manoeuvres
  • Minutes 25–35: Review of any prior imaging or correspondence you bring; working diagnosis explained in plain language
  • Minutes 35–45: Personalised treatment plan discussed in detail — including self-management, physiotherapy referral, injection options, and surgical opinion if appropriate

You leave with a clear next step. The written report follows by email the same day or within 24 hours.

How do I prepare for the appointment?

To make best use of the 30–45 minutes:

  • Bring any prior imaging (MRI scans on disc, ultrasound reports, X-ray reports/images)
  • Bring any clinical correspondence — physiotherapy notes, GP letters, hospital discharge summaries, prior consultation reports
  • Wear or bring loose clothing that allows access to the area being examined
  • Note your symptom timeline — when it started, what makes it worse, what you’ve tried, and what’s worked or hasn’t
  • List your current medications and any allergies
  • Write down 2–3 specific questions you want answered — this helps make sure your priorities are addressed
Can the consultant arrange injection therapy or surgery?

Yes. If injection therapy is recommended, your consultant can arrange this through our Joint Pain Clinic — usually as a separate appointment, or sometimes at the same visit if time and the specific injection allow.

If surgical opinion is required, your consultant generates a same-day formal referral letter for your GP or directly to an orthopaedic surgeon (NHS or private). For private surgical opinion, we can recommend appropriate consultant orthopaedic surgeons in central London.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not require a GP referral. Self-refer directly online at londonsono.com or call 020 7101 3377. Appointments are available 7 days a week including weekends at our Central London (27 Welbeck Street, Harley Street medical district) and St Albans (54–56 Victoria Street) clinics.

How does London Private Ultrasound work with the National Health Service?

Many of our patients are concerned that if they come to us, they won’t be able to go back to public health. That simply is not the case. Our goal is to give you answers as quickly as possible and get you on the right treatment path fast — no strings attached.

If your assessment reveals a condition requiring NHS surgical management — for example a complete tendon rupture, joint replacement consideration, or a soft tissue mass requiring oncology assessment — your consultant generates a same-day formal referral letter for your GP at no additional charge. We work alongside the NHS, not instead of it.
