What the Full Body MOT Blood Test Checks

Here is what your blood test looks at. Your GP goes through every result with you, alongside your scan and health history, and explains what it means in plain words.

  • Full blood count and ESR

Red and white cells and platelets, plus ESR, to look for anaemia, infection and inflammation.

  • Kidney function

Urea, creatinine, eGFR and electrolytes show how well your kidneys filter your blood.

  • Liver function

Bilirubin, ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, protein, albumin and globulin show liver strain or inflammation.

  • Bone and minerals

Calcium, phosphate, magnesium and uric acid, linked to bone health, cramps and gout.

  • Blood glucose

Finds raised blood sugar, an early sign of diabetes that rarely causes symptoms.

  • Cholesterol profile

Total, HDL, LDL and non-HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, key to your heart and stroke risk.

  • Iron and TIBC

Iron and total iron-binding capacity, which help explain tiredness and low energy.

  • Plus your ECG

Your heart rate and rhythm, read alongside your cholesterol and blood sugar.

  • Plus your scan

Fatty liver and gallstones often show on the scan before they change your blood results.

New year, new you

New Year Health Check: Are You Ready and Healthy for 2027?

The new year is when most of us set health goals. A New Year health check gives you real numbers to start from, for your cholesterol, blood sugar, liver, kidneys and heart rhythm, so your resolutions are built on facts and you can measure your progress next January.

Why start the year with a full body health check?

After the festive season

Rich food and extra alcohol over Christmas can show up in your cholesterol and liver results, so January shows where you really are.

Before your resolutions

Starting Dry January, a new diet or the gym? A baseline lets you measure what has really changed.

Problems with no symptoms

Raised cholesterol, high blood sugar, a fatty liver and an irregular heart rhythm often cause no symptoms at all.

Goals you will keep

Goals built on your own numbers are easier to stick to, and next January you can compare every result.

Your New Year health check checklist

What to check at the start of the year, how your health MOT checks it, and the kind of goal your result can shape for 2027.

New Year health check checklist: what to check, how the Advanced Health MOT checks it and the goal it can shape
What to checkHow your MOT checks itA goal it can shape

Heart rhythmResting 12-lead ECGGetting palpitations or an irregular rhythm looked at

Questions to bring to your GP consultation

  • Your family history of heart disease, diabetes, stroke or liver disease
  • Your goals for the year, such as weight, fitness or cutting down on alcohol
  • How much you drink, including over Christmas and New Year
  • Your medicines and supplements, including anything you buy yourself

New year, new you. Book your health MOT for January or before the new year. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available, 7 days a week.

Is it for you?

Who Benefits From a Full Body MOT Health Check?

You do not need symptoms to book. A private health MOT is a good idea if any of these sound like you.

  • You want a New Year health check to start the year with real numbers
  • You are over 40, or under 40 and not yet eligible for the NHS Health Check
  • A family history of heart disease, diabetes, kidney or liver disease
  • Weight around the middle or regular drinking, both linked to fatty liver
  • Tired or low in energy with no clear cause
  • No check-up in years and you want a full picture without waiting

Do not wait for a health check if you have chest pain, sudden breathlessness or signs of a stroke such as a drooping face, arm weakness or slurred speech: call 999. See a GP promptly for yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, blood in your urine or weight loss you cannot explain.

Questions

Full Body MOT: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a full body MOT cost?

At London Private Ultrasound the Advanced Health MOT costs £399 all-inclusive: an advanced blood test, a resting 12-lead ECG, an abdominal ultrasound scan and a 20-minute GP consultation. Full body MOTs in the UK usually cost from under £200 for basic blood-test checks to over £1,000 when a full body scan is included.

Is a full body MOT worth it?

For most adults over 40, or anyone with heart disease, diabetes or liver disease in the family, yes. Raised cholesterol, blood sugar, fatty liver and gallstones rarely cause symptoms, so a health MOT finds them while simple changes still work. If you feel unwell now, see a doctor first.

What is included in a full body MOT?

It depends on the clinic. Ours includes an advanced blood panel (blood count, liver, kidney, bone, cholesterol, glucose and iron), a resting 12-lead ECG of your heart, an abdominal ultrasound of your liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys, and a 20-minute GP consultation to agree a plan.

Can you get a full body MOT on the NHS?

Not as such. If you are 40 to 74 with no existing heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or high blood pressure, the free NHS Health Check checks blood pressure, cholesterol and heart risk every five years. It does not include a scan or liver, kidney and blood count tests.

What does a full body MOT blood test check?

Our advanced panel checks your full blood count and ESR, kidney function (urea, creatinine, eGFR, electrolytes), liver function (ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, bilirubin, proteins), bone profile (calcium, phosphate, magnesium, uric acid), glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides, and iron with TIBC.

Is this a full body MOT health check with scans?

Yes. It includes an abdominal ultrasound of your liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys, alongside your blood test and a resting 12-lead ECG of your heart. Fatty liver and gallstones often show on a scan before they change your blood results, which is why both are included.

Does the Advanced Health MOT include an ECG?

Yes. A resting 12-lead ECG is included at your first appointment, at no extra cost. Stickers on your chest, arms and legs record your heart’s electrical activity for a few minutes. It can show an irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation, and your GP goes through it with your results.

Are yearly health checks worth it?

For most adults, yes. A yearly health check lets you compare your cholesterol, blood sugar, liver and kidney results each year, so changes are spotted early and your New Year goals start from real numbers. If your results are normal and you have no risk factors, your GP may suggest every one to two years.

Who is entitled to a yearly health check?

On the NHS, adults aged 40 to 74 without heart disease, diabetes or kidney disease are offered a free NHS Health Check every five years, and people with a learning disability aged 14 and over have an annual health check. Anyone can book a private yearly health check, with no GP referral.

Can I have a blood test in January after Christmas?

Yes. Do not eat for 4 hours before your blood test and scan, and drink water as normal. Heavy drinking over the holidays can temporarily raise liver results such as GGT, so tell your GP how much you have been drinking, and they will read your results with that in mind.

Do I need a GP referral for a health MOT?

No. You can book the Advanced Health MOT directly online, by phone or on WhatsApp, with no referral from your NHS GP and no medical insurance. You receive your own results and scan report, which you can share with your NHS GP.

How quickly do I get my health MOT results?

Your sonographer talks you through the scan on the day. Your written ultrasound report follows within 24 hours, and your blood results are usually back within 24 hours too. Your GP then goes through your ECG, bloods and scan with you at your GP consultation.

Do I need to fast before a health MOT?

Yes. Do not eat for 4 hours before your blood test and scan; water is fine. Fasting makes your blood glucose result more reliable and helps the sonographer see your gallbladder and other abdominal organs clearly. Keep taking your usual medicines unless told otherwise.

What can a full body MOT detect?

It can find raised cholesterol or blood sugar, anaemia, low iron, kidney or liver problems, an irregular heart rhythm, fatty liver, gallstones and cysts in your abdominal organs. It is not a cancer screening test, and normal results do not rule out every condition.

How long does the Advanced Health MOT take?

There are two appointments. Your blood test, ECG and abdominal scan are done together in under an hour. Your 20-minute GP consultation is on the first Monday, Wednesday or Friday after your blood results come back from the laboratory. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available for the blood test and scan.

Where can I get a full body MOT near me in London?

At our Central London clinic, 27 Welbeck Street in the Harley Street medical district, or at 54–56 Victoria Street in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Both are open 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, and same-day or next-day appointments are often available.

Medical disclaimer. This page is general information and does not replace individual medical advice. A health MOT checks for common problems; normal results do not rule out every condition, and some people need further tests, a scan or a specialist review. Call 999 for chest pain, sudden breathlessness or signs of a stroke.
