The Four Parts of Your Private Heart Health Checkup

Everything in the £449 checkup takes place in one visit, led by a cardiologist, and every higher package includes all four parts.

1. Cardiologist consultation

Your cardiologist takes a detailed history of your symptoms, family history, medication and lifestyle, and reviews any previous results. This puts every test that follows in context, so your findings are read for you rather than against a generic reference range. You have time to ask questions and leave with a clear plan.

2. Echocardiogram

A heart ultrasound that shows your heart working in real time: the size of each chamber, the movement of the walls and how well the valves open and close. It measures pumping performance and can show valve leaks or narrowing and thickened heart muscle. It uses sound waves only, with no radiation.

3. 12-lead ECG

Small sensors on your chest, arms and legs record 12 views of your heart’s electrical activity within minutes. It can reveal rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation, conduction changes, signs of previous heart strain and patterns that suggest a reduced blood supply to the heart muscle.

4. Cardiovascular examination

Your cardiologist checks your pulse and blood pressure, listens to your heart sounds for murmurs, and looks for signs such as ankle swelling. These findings are combined with your ECG and echocardiogram, which helps decide whether anything seen on the tests matters clinically.

Questions

Heart Health Checkup: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private heart health checkup cost in London?

At London Private Ultrasound a heart health check costs £449, all-inclusive: a consultation with a cardiologist, an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), a 12-lead ECG and a cardiovascular physical examination. There are no hidden extras.

Three higher packages add more: Plus (£685) adds a GP consultation and advanced blood tests, Premium (£995) adds a carotid Doppler scan, and Diamond (£1,220) adds an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound. Comparable consultant-led heart checks elsewhere in London are often priced at around £1,000 or more.

What is included in a private heart health checkup?

The £449 heart health check includes four components: a consultation with a cardiologist to review your symptoms, family history and risk factors; an echocardiogram to assess your heart chambers, valves and pumping function; a 12-lead ECG to check your heart rhythm and electrical activity; and a focused cardiovascular examination including pulse, blood pressure and heart sounds.

Your cardiologist explains the key findings during the visit and you receive a written cardiac report. Blood tests are not part of the £449 check, but are included in the Plus, Premium and Diamond packages.

What are the 5 warning signs of heart disease?

Common warning signs are: chest pain or tightness, breathlessness (especially on exertion or lying flat), palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, dizziness or fainting, and swelling in the ankles or unusual tiredness. Pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back can also signal a heart problem.

A heart health check is a good next step for symptoms that come and go or have not been explained. Sudden or severe symptoms need urgent help, not a booked appointment.

How do you know if you have heart disease?

Many heart conditions cause no symptoms at first, so you cannot always tell without testing. A cardiologist looks at your history and examination, then uses tests such as an ECG (rhythm and electrical changes) and an echocardiogram (structure, valves and pumping function) to see how the heart is working.

Together these can show valve problems, a weakened heart muscle, an abnormal rhythm or signs of past heart strain. They do not directly show the coronary arteries, so your cardiologist may suggest further tests if your story points that way.

Is there a free heart screening in the UK, and how is this different from an NHS Health Check?

The NHS offers a free NHS Health Check in England to eligible adults aged 40 to 74, usually every five years. It combines questions, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight to estimate your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It does not normally include an ECG or a heart ultrasound.

A private heart health check goes a step further: you see a cardiologist and have your heart rhythm and structure tested on the same day, with no referral. Many people use it when they have symptoms, a family history, or simply want a clearer picture than a risk score can give.

Is there a blood test for a heart attack or heart disease?

Blood tests can show risk factors such as cholesterol, blood sugar and inflammation, which is why advanced bloods are part of our Plus, Premium and Diamond packages. No single blood test can predict that you will have a heart attack.

A troponin blood test can confirm a heart attack that is happening now, but it is done in hospital, not as a screening test. If you have current chest pain, call 999 or go to A&E.

Does a heart health checkup include a CT scan, a stress test or blood tests?

The £449 checkup uses ultrasound and ECG, so there is no radiation, and it does not include a CT scan, an exercise stress test or blood tests. A CT coronary calcium score and an exercise stress test are separate cardiac investigations that your cardiologist can advise on after your results.

Blood tests are included from the Plus package upwards. Individual cardiac tests are listed on our Heart Health page.

What is the difference between the Heart Health Checkup, Plus, Premium and Diamond packages?

The Heart Health Checkup (£449) covers a cardiologist consultation, echocardiogram, 12-lead ECG and cardiovascular examination, and suits palpitations, breathlessness, a baseline check or reassurance. Plus (£685) adds a GP consultation and advanced blood tests for a wider look at your risk factors.

Premium (£995) adds a carotid Doppler scan of the neck arteries, relevant to stroke risk, high blood pressure and a family history of stroke. Diamond (£1,220) adds an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound and is our most comprehensive cardiac and vascular check. Our team can talk you through the options on 020 7101 3377.

Why is the Diamond heart health check the most booked?

The Heart Health Check Diamond brings everything into one visit: cardiologist consultation, echocardiogram, ECG and examination, a GP consultation with advanced bloods, a carotid Doppler scan and an abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound.

That means your heart, the arteries to your brain and your main abdominal artery are all checked on the same day, with one joined-up report. Many people prefer to do it once, thoroughly, rather than add tests over several appointments.

Do I need a GP referral for a heart health check?

No. You can book directly online or by phone, and you do not need a GP referral or insurance. With your consent we can send your report to your GP, and if anything needs onward care we will write the referral letter.

When will I get my heart health checkup results?

Your cardiologist explains the key ECG and echocardiogram findings during your appointment, so you leave knowing where you stand and what to do next. A written cardiac report follows, in line with clinic reporting times, and can be shared with your GP with your consent.

If the check shows something that needs attention, your cardiologist will advise on further tests, follow-up with your GP, or a referral. Urgent findings are acted on promptly.

How long does a heart health checkup take, how do I prepare and is it painful?

Allow around 60 minutes for the £449 check. Preparation is minimal: wear loose clothing that is easy to remove from the chest, bring a list of your medications and any previous ECG or heart scan reports, and carry on taking your medicines as normal unless advised otherwise. Longer packages with a GP consultation, bloods or extra scans take a little longer.

Nothing about it is painful. The ECG uses small sticky sensors, and the echocardiogram uses warm gel and a gentle probe on the chest. There are no needles in the £449 check and no radiation.

Who should opt for a heart health checkup?

A heart health checkup is worth considering if you have symptoms such as palpitations, breathlessness, chest discomfort or dizziness; risk factors such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes or a family history of heart disease; or you are over 40 and want a baseline. It is also popular for fitness and sports screening, before increasing training, and for peace of mind.

It is also helpful if you have a known murmur, a previous abnormal ECG, or want to monitor a known valve finding.

Where can I get a private heart health checkup in London?

We offer private heart health checks at two clinics: Central London at 27 Welbeck Street in the Harley Street medical district, two minutes from Bond Street station, and St Albans at 54–56 Victoria Street, close to St Albans City station. The same checks and prices apply at both.

Appointments are available 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, and same-day or next-day slots are often available. Book in the calendar on this page or call 020 7101 3377.

What is the difference between a heart health check, an ECG and an echocardiogram?

An ECG records your heart’s electrical activity and rhythm. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound that shows the heart’s structure, valves and pumping. Each answers a different question.

A heart health check combines both with a consultation and examination, so a cardiologist can read the results in the context of your symptoms and history. Multi-day rhythm recording, such as a Holter monitor, is a separate test.

When should I seek urgent help instead of booking a heart health checkup?

A heart health check is for planned assessment, not emergencies. Call 999 or go to A&E for current chest pain or pressure, especially with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, collapse, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back.

Also call 999 if you think someone is having a stroke: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech slurred, Time to call 999. For symptoms that are new but not severe, contact your GP or NHS 111.

Medical disclaimer. This page is general information and does not replace individual medical advice. An ECG and echocardiogram do not show the coronary arteries directly, and a normal result cannot rule out every heart condition. Call 999 if you have current chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, or think someone is having a stroke, rather than booking a routine check.
