Ultrasound-Guided Corticosteroid Injection

An ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection delivers powerful anti-inflammatory medication directly to inflamed tissue under real-time imaging. It is commonly used for bursitis, frozen shoulder, joint synovitis, trigger finger, De Quervain’s, carpal tunnel syndrome and selected joint pain conditions. Price: £299 all-inclusive. No GP referral required.

A precision anti-inflammatory injection performed under live ultrasound guidance — helping place the medication accurately at the target tissue rather than relying on surface landmarks alone. Same-day appointments are often available, with clear aftercare and a written report.

How It Works

What Corticosteroid Does — and What It Does Not Do

Corticosteroid is a powerful local anti-inflammatory treatment. It can reduce swelling and pain when inflammation is the main driver of symptoms, but it is not the best choice for every tendon or joint problem.

What Corticosteroid Treats Well

Corticosteroid works best where the main problem is active inflammation, bursal swelling, synovial thickening, or irritation around a nerve or tendon sheath.

Common examples include: subacromial bursitis, trochanteric bursitis, frozen shoulder, trigger finger, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, AC joint pain, Morton’s neuroma and inflammatory joint synovitis.

When Corticosteroid May Not Be Best

In chronic tendinopathy with active Doppler neovascularity, corticosteroid may not be the preferred treatment. In that situation, your clinician may recommend PRP or a different pathway after imaging review.

Important The correct injection depends on the diagnosis and ultrasound findings. The aim is to treat the right tissue with the right therapy.

The expected benefit, limitations, possible side effects and aftercare are explained before consent is taken.

20–25Min

Sterile Preparation

The skin is cleaned and the target area is prepared using sterile technique.

25–30Min

Ultrasound-Guided Injection

The needle is guided to the target tissue under live ultrasound and the medication is delivered precisely.

30–45Min

Aftercare & Plan

You receive a dressing, aftercare guidance and advice on activity, physiotherapy or further treatment where needed.

Why Image Guidance

Why Ultrasound-Guided Injection Is More Accurate

Ultrasound guidance allows the clinician to see the needle and target tissue in real time, improving accuracy compared with landmark-guided injection.

01

Precision Placement

The medication is delivered into the correct joint, bursa or tendon sheath rather than estimated from the skin surface.

02

Better Target Selection

Ultrasound helps identify the structure responsible for pain, including bursitis, synovitis, effusion or tendon sheath inflammation.

03

Reduced Complication Risk

Doppler can help identify vessels and ultrasound visualises tendons, nerves and adjacent structures.

04

Real-Time Confirmation

The clinician can observe medication spread at the target site during the procedure.

How long until I feel benefit?

Some patients notice improvement within a few days, but the main effect usually develops over 1–2 weeks, with maximum benefit around 4–6 weeks.

What are the possible side effects?

Common effects include temporary soreness, a small bruise or facial flushing. Diabetic patients may notice temporary blood sugar rise. Infection is rare with sterile technique.
