About our Hand Ultrasound Scan – Two Limbs
At London Private Ultrasound, we offer high-resolution hand ultrasound scans for male and female patients aged 18 and over. These scans are most commonly used to investigate hand pain, swelling, or limited movement, particularly following sports injuries, repetitive strain, or arthritic conditions.
During the scan, a specialist musculoskeletal sonographer will assess the key soft tissue structures of the hand, including tendons, ligaments, joints, bursae, and surrounding tissues.
Ultrasound is a dynamic, real-time imaging technique that is fast, safe, and highly effective in evaluating a wide range of hand injuries, inflammation, and musculoskeletal disorders. It allows for motion-based assessment, making it particularly valuable in diagnosing tendon pathology, joint effusion, soft tissue masses, and inflammatory conditions with precision and immediacy.
What the Hand Ultrasound Scan Covers:
-
Tendons – including flexor and extensor tendons for signs of tears, inflammation, tendinitis, or tenosynovitis
-
Ligaments – assessing for partial or complete ligament injuries
-
Small joints – metacarpophalangeal (MCP), interphalangeal (PIP, DIP), and carpal joints
-
Joint capsule and synovial fluid – for joint effusion or inflammation
-
Soft tissues – cysts, masses, foreign bodies, or trauma-related swelling
-
Bursae – to detect fluid accumulation and bursitis
-
Nerves (limited visualisation) – including indirect assessment for nerve entrapment (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome in some cases)
-
Bone surface – for cortical irregularities, stress fractures, or erosions in arthritis
