Blood Test Detail

D-Dimer Blood Test: How It Supports the DVT Pathway

The D-Dimer result is clinically useful when interpreted with symptoms, risk factors and Doppler ultrasound findings.

D-Dimer Overview

D-Dimer measures fibrin degradation products that may rise when clot formation and breakdown are occurring. A raised D-Dimer does not automatically mean DVT, because it can rise in infection, inflammation, pregnancy, recent surgery, trauma and many other conditions. A negative result may help reduce DVT likelihood in low-risk situations when combined with clinical assessment.

What it helps with

  • Supports DVT risk assessment
  • Useful alongside Doppler ultrasound
  • Helps guide GP discussion and follow-up

Why it needs context

  • Can be raised for non-DVT reasons
  • Should not be used alone to diagnose DVT
  • Clinical risk factors and scan findings matter

Same-day pathway

  • Blood sample taken during your visit
  • Reviewed with ultrasound findings
  • Explained by GP and Pharmacist where relevant
Doppler Ultrasound Coverage

What the DVT Scan Assesses

The Doppler ultrasound looks for evidence of clot within the deep venous system and assesses venous blood flow.

Deep Veins

  • Common femoral vein
  • Femoral vein
  • Popliteal vein
  • Calf veins where clinically indicated

Flow and Compressibility

  • Compression response
  • Blood flow direction and pattern
  • Areas of restricted or absent flow
  • Features suspicious for thrombus

Alternative Findings

  • Baker’s cyst features
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis
  • Venous insufficiency clues
  • Other causes for symptoms where visible

FAQ

DVT Health Check Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly online, by phone or by WhatsApp. For urgent same-day DVT concerns, calling is usually fastest.

What if I have chest pain or breathlessness?

Call 999 immediately. Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, coughing blood, collapse or fainting may suggest pulmonary embolism and requires emergency care.

Is D-Dimer enough to diagnose DVT?

No. D-Dimer must be interpreted with clinical risk and ultrasound findings. It can be raised for several non-DVT reasons.

What happens if DVT is confirmed?

The GP will explain next steps and onward care. The Pharmacist review can cover anticoagulant choice, drug interactions, bleeding risks and medication safety considerations.
