We offer four breast ultrasound scans, each designed for a different clinical scenario, from general bilateral breast review to focused implant-related assessment.
Two-Breast Ultrasound Scan (Both Breasts)
A comprehensive ultrasound examination of both breasts and the surrounding axillary (armpit) lymph nodes. This is our most frequently chosen breast ultrasound and is appropriate for women presenting with symptoms in either breast, those seeking a general breast health assessment, or those who want a complete bilateral review.
Both breasts are examined in full by one of our specialist sonographers, and a written report is provided promptly after your appointment.
This scan is the recommended starting point if you have a new lump, breast pain, nipple changes, asymmetry, or any other concern affecting one or both breasts.
One-Breast Ultrasound Scan (Single Breast)
A focused ultrasound examination of one breast, including the axillary lymph nodes on the same side. This is the appropriate choice when your symptoms are clearly localised to one side, or when you require follow-up imaging of a specific area in one breast only.
If findings during your scan suggest that the other breast should also be examined, our sonographer will advise you accordingly.
Breast Implant Ultrasound Assessment
A specialist ultrasound examination for women with breast implants, performed to assess the integrity of the implant shell and the surrounding tissue. This scan checks for signs of implant rupture, folding, leakage, or other structural changes.
It is recommended for women who have had implants for several years, those experiencing changes in breast shape, firmness, or discomfort, or those who have been advised to have their implants reviewed as part of routine surveillance.
Breast implant ultrasound is the first-line imaging investigation for implant-related concerns. It is safe, non-invasive, and can identify many types of implant complication clearly and accurately.
Breast Implant Capsular Contracture Ultrasound Scan
A targeted ultrasound scan for women who are concerned about capsular contracture — a condition in which a firm layer of scar tissue forms around a breast implant, causing hardening, distortion, and sometimes pain.
This specialist scan assesses the capsule, the implant, and the surrounding tissue in detail, helping to characterise the nature and severity of the contracture. The findings support clinical decision-making about further management, including whether surgical intervention may be needed.
If you have concerns about capsular contracture, this scan should be your first step before seeking a surgical consultation.
What happens during the scan
Your scan will be performed by a trained specialist sonographer in a private, comfortable clinic room. You will be asked to undress from the waist up and lie on an examination couch.
A small amount of warm ultrasound gel will be applied to the skin, and the sonographer will move the ultrasound probe gently across the breast surface to capture detailed images.
The scan itself is entirely painless and typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the type of scan. You will receive a full written report emailed to you after your appointment, usually on the same day.
