Follow the pelvic scan’s full-bladder instructions. Breast and thyroid ultrasound usually need no special preparation.

Scan

Your clinician performs each ultrasound assessment and explains the main findings during the appointment.

Report

You receive a written ultrasound report, with advice on appropriate follow-up if a finding needs further assessment.

Pelvic scan preparation: you may be asked to drink about 1 litre of water around one hour before the appointment and arrive with a comfortably full bladder. A transvaginal scan may be offered when appropriate and is performed only with your consent.

Ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool, but it is not a whole-body cancer screen and does not replace every other test used in women’s healthcare.

No. It is performed only when clinically appropriate and only with your consent. You can decline it.

Does the package replace mammography?

No. Breast ultrasound and mammography provide different information. Continue to attend NHS breast screening when invited and seek clinical advice for concerning symptoms.

Will the scan test thyroid function?

No. Ultrasound assesses the thyroid’s structure. Thyroid hormone function is assessed with blood tests, which are not part of this ultrasound-only package unless separately arranged.

What happens if something is found?

Your report describes the finding and may recommend GP review, specialist consultation, follow-up ultrasound or another investigation such as mammography, blood tests, MRI or biopsy.
