What the pathway can investigate
Common causes of abnormal menstrual bleeding
Fibroids & structural changes
Pelvic ultrasound can assess uterine fibroids and their relationship to the endometrial cavity.
Endometrial abnormalities
The endometrial lining can be measured and assessed for focal or diffuse changes that may require further review.
Ovarian cysts
The ovaries are assessed for cysts, masses and other visible abnormalities.
Hormonal imbalance
Reproductive hormone testing can support investigation of irregular or absent cycles.
Thyroid dysfunction
TSH and Free T4 are included because thyroid disorders can contribute to menstrual disturbance.
Anaemia & iron depletion
Full blood count and ferritin support assessment of the impact of prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding.
Clinical note: ultrasound can identify structural causes and suspicious appearances but does not diagnose cancer by itself. Any postmenopausal bleeding, persistent intermenstrual bleeding or concerning finding should receive appropriate medical assessment and onward investigation.
