Private family health check packages at London Private Ultrasound
Choosing the right family health check means matching each adult’s age, history and risks to the appropriate level of assessment.
Quick answer: The most affordable family health-check plan is rarely one identical package for everyone. A healthy adult may need blood tests and a focused MOT, while an older relative or someone with cardiovascular risk may benefit from ECG, echocardiography or wider imaging. A GP review helps put all results into context.

Most families who come to us for a health check aren’t unwell.

Often it’s a parent turning 50, a partner with a family history of heart disease, or someone who realises they haven’t had a blood test in years.

Sometimes it’s simply a wish to know where everyone stands before small problems have a chance to become bigger ones.

But when you start looking, private health checks can feel confusing. Prices range from a simple blood test to packages costing well over £2,000, and it isn’t always clear what each one actually includes, or whether you need it at all.

So the most affordable option is usually the check that suits each person’s age, health and family history.

We’ve compiled this guide to explain what a private health check includes, how it compares with the free NHS Health Check, and to help you decide which package might suit you or your family best.

What Is a Private Health Check?

A private health check is a planned assessment of your general health, usually combining blood tests, a physical check, and ultrasound where needed, followed by a GP explaining your results.

When you choose to go the private route, you pay for it, with no GP referral needed, and you often get same-day or same-week appointments, rather than the NHS waitlist.

A health check also looks at your overall health to pick up risk factors early, such as high cholesterol, raised blood sugar or a problem with your liver or kidneys that hasn’t caused symptoms yet.

What Does a Private Health Check Include?

A private health check usually includes blood tests, basic measurements such as blood pressure, and a consultation with a doctor, while more comprehensive packages add ultrasound scans and heart tests.

Here’s a quick overview of what each part looks at:

Swipe sideways to view the full table.

Part of the checkWhat it looks at
Blood testsCholesterol, blood sugar, liver and kidney function, blood count, iron and bone minerals
Physical measurementsBlood pressure, weight, waist and body mass index (BMI)
Ultrasound scansThe liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys, and in fuller checks the thyroid, neck arteries and pelvis
Heart testsYour heart rhythm (ECG) and, in some packages, how well your heart pumps (echocardiogram)
Doctor consultationYour results explained together, with advice on what to do next

It’s important to check whether a GP consultation is included, as some clinics may not include it by default.

But a doctor’s consultation is something that we add by default in most of our health check packages at London Private Ultrasound.

This is because results are often interpreted best when we have a specialist reviewing them. You’ll know what they mean, whether a diagnostic pathway is needed, and whether levels are normal for your age and lifestyle.

Want a Thorough Check Without Paying for a Full Body Scan?

Our Advanced Health MOT brings an advanced blood test, an abdominal ultrasound of your liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys, and a consultation with a GP into one coordinated visit. It is all-inclusive and does not need a GP referral.

What Is the Difference Between an NHS Health Check and a Private Health Check?

The main difference between an NHS Health Check and a private health check is who can have one and how much it covers.

The NHS Health Check is free for adults in England aged 40 to 74 who don’t already have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or a previous stroke, and you’re invited every 5 years.

It checks your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and sometimes blood sugar, and gives you your risk of heart disease and stroke over the next 10 years.

A private health check can be booked at any age and at any time, and it can go further. Here’s how they compare:

If you’re eligible, the NHS Health Check is a sensible place to start, and so are the free NHS screening programmes for bowel, breast and cervical cancer.

A private check works best alongside these for people who want a wider look, want to check their health proactively, or have concerns about symptoms that might be showing up.

Which Private Health Check Package Is Right for You?

Choosing the right health package can be easier if you have the right parameters in mind. Ideally, it depends on your age, whether you’re booking for yourself, a partner or the whole family, and how much detail you’d like, so each person may need a slightly different check.

Here’s a guide to the packages we offer and who each package may suit:

Guide to choosing the right private health check package
The best-value health check depends on age, symptoms, family history and how broad an assessment you want.

In your 40s and 50s

Your 40s and 50s are when risks such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and fatty liver become more common, often without symptoms.

The Advanced Health MOT (£395) combines a wide blood panel with an abdominal-organ scan and GP review. If heart disease runs in your family, or you smoke or have high blood pressure, consider a check that includes an ECG and heart-risk score.

For men

The Men’s Health MOT (£495) is a GP-led check for men who want their heart risk, cholesterol, blood sugar and energy levels considered together, especially if heart disease or diabetes runs in the family.

For women

The Women’s Health MOT (£495) follows the same approach, with a 60-minute GP consultation and head-to-toe examination. It suits women who want a clear picture of their heart and metabolic health, or who have been feeling tired or run down without a clear reason.

For couples

Our men’s and women’s health MOTs let you book your checks as a pair, and they can make a thoughtful gift. If you’re unsure which level suits each person, call us and we’ll talk you through the options.

If you’re worried about one particular organ

If you have a symptom, unusual blood result or relevant family history, a focused check of that organ may tell you more than a general check.

Organ health packages start from £449 and cover the liver, kidneys, thyroid, prostate, breasts and pelvis. Most combine ultrasound, relevant blood tests and a GP review.

If you have high cholesterol or a risk of diabetes

A package built around those numbers can be better value than a general check. Cholesterol and diabetes pathways start from £200 and can add blood sugar tests, fatty-liver imaging, carotid scanning and heart assessment.

The Diabetes Prevention Assessment (£499) includes liver and abdominal ultrasound, fasting glucose, HbA1c and cholesterol tests, plus a GP consultation.

For fertility and sexual health

The Women’s Fertility Health Check starts from £799 and assesses fertility hormones such as AMH, with pelvic ultrasound in the Advanced and Premium versions. The Male Fertility Test starts from £669 and includes semen analysis, testicular ultrasound and a GP appointment.

The Sexual Health Clinic offers confidential STI screening for men and women, from £559 for a package that includes a GP appointment.

For sports and fitness

The Sports & Fitness Health Check, from £1,499, combines 50+ blood results with an echocardiogram, abdominal ultrasound, liver elastography and a GP appointment.

For the whole family

There isn’t one package that suits every family member. A younger adult may benefit from the Advanced Health MOT, while someone older might need a premium package or a fuller check that includes the heart.

For parents and grandparents

For older relatives, a check that looks at the heart, kidneys and blood vessels as well as routine bloods may give useful reassurance. The Premium Health Checks for men and women (£1,795) combine full-body ultrasound, heart assessment, bloods, urine and stool tests, GP consultation and a detailed report.

Children and teenagers

Most children don’t need routine health checks beyond those offered through the NHS. Concerns about a child’s health are best discussed with your GP. Our packages are designed for adults aged 18 and over.

Want a GP to Look at Heart Risk as Well as Blood Results?

Our Men’s Health MOT and Women’s Health MOT each include a 60-minute GP consultation and examination, resting ECG, QRISK estimate, blood and urine tests, written report and follow-up call. At £495, they provide a GP-led assessment of heart and metabolic health.

How Much Does a Private Health Check Cost in the UK?

A private health check in the UK can cost from around £200 for a basic blood-test check to over £1,000 when a full-body scan is included, depending on how many tests, scans and consultations you get.

When you compare prices, check whether the price includes a doctor’s consultation, a written report and follow-up, as some cheaper checks provide blood results only.

Here’s what our most popular health checks cost at London Private Ultrasound:

A family doesn’t need to book the most expensive package for everyone.

For many adults, a £395 to £549 check covers the essentials, while a fuller check suits people with more risk factors or those who want a detailed full-body assessment.

How to Find an Affordable Private Family Health Check

The most affordable way to check your family’s health privately is to match each person to the check that fits their age and risk.

A blood test or an Advanced Health MOT may be all a healthy adult in their 30s or 40s needs. An older family member with risk factors may get more from a check with an ECG or heart scan, and booking a different check for each person is often the best value overall.

At London Private Ultrasound, you can call us and we’ll help you decide the best package for your family.

Are Private Health Checks Worth It?

Private health checks can be worthwhile when they’re chosen carefully, because they can identify risk factors such as high cholesterol, raised blood sugar, fatty liver or high blood pressure early, when lifestyle changes or treatment can make a difference.

It also helps to pair testing with a GP consultation rather than interpreting results on your own, so findings are considered in the context of your age and medical history.

Can You Pay for a Private Health Check Without Insurance?

You can pay for a private health check without health insurance, as most private clinics, including London Private Ultrasound, offer self-pay health checks at a fixed price.

You don’t need a GP referral and can book directly online or by phone. If you have private medical insurance, check your policy because some plans include an annual health assessment.

What Happens After Your Private Health Check?

After your private health check, your results are explained and you receive a written report with recommended next steps.

At London Private Ultrasound, your GP and sonographer talk you through your scan and history on the day, and your written scan report and blood results usually follow within 24 hours. If anything needs further investigation, your GP will explain the options and advise on referral.

You can also share your report with your NHS GP, so your results become part of your ongoing care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you have a private health check?

How often depends on your age and health, and there’s no fixed rule for everyone. Many people have a health MOT once a year to compare their numbers, while every one to two years may be reasonable if initial results are normal and there are no risk factors.

Can I book health checks for my whole family at the same time?

You can book a health check for each adult in your family, and each person can choose the package that suits them. For appointments close together, call 020 7101 3377 and we’ll help find suitable times.

Do I need to fast before a private health check?

Some checks require fasting. For the Advanced Health MOT, we ask you not to eat for 4 hours before the appointment. Follow the preparation instructions supplied when you book, or call if you’re unsure.

Are private health checks useful for over 50s?

Private health checks can be particularly useful for people over 50, as the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other conditions rises with age.

Can children have a private health check?

Our health check packages are designed for adults aged 18 and over. If you’re worried about a child’s health, speak to your GP, who can arrange any tests your child needs.
