Liver problems are common and often have no obvious symptoms. If any of these sound like you, a liver health check is a good idea.
Ache under the right ribs, bloating, nausea, itchy skin or tiredness with no clear cause.
Raised ALT, AST or GGT on an earlier test, and you want to know why.

Eight of the 26 markers make up your liver function test (LFT). Read together, they show whether liver cells are irritated, whether bile is flowing freely and how well your liver is making proteins.
Released when liver cells are irritated. Often the first marker to rise with fatty liver, alcohol, medicines or hepatitis.
Found in liver and muscle. Its ratio to ALT can help point towards the cause of liver damage.
Often raised by alcohol, some medicines and blocked bile ducts. Helps explain a raised ALP.
Comes from the bile ducts and bone. A raised level can mean bile is not draining properly, for example with gallstones.
A yellow pigment the liver clears. High levels cause jaundice; a mild rise is often harmless Gilbert’s syndrome.
Made by the liver. A low level can be a sign of long-standing liver disease, poor nutrition or kidney protein loss.
The total of the proteins in your blood, used with albumin to work out globulin.
Raised with long-term inflammation, some autoimmune liver conditions and chronic infection.

Do not eat for 6 to 8 hours before your appointment; water is fine. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, keep taking your usual medicines, and wear loose, two-piece clothing so your tummy is easy to scan.

A liver health check looks at how well your liver is working and what it looks like. Ours combines a scan of the liver and upper abdomen with liver blood tests, then a GP and a pharmacist review the results with you in the same visit. No GP referral is needed.
Most people with fatty liver have no symptoms at all, which is why it is usually found on a scan or blood test. When symptoms do appear they include tiredness, a dull ache under the right ribs, feeling generally unwell, unexplained weight loss and, in later stages, yellow skin or swelling.
Early signs are vague: tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea and discomfort under the right ribs. Later signs include yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin and swollen legs or tummy. Go to A&E if you have yellow skin with confusion, vomit blood or pass black stools.
Home finger-prick kits can measure liver enzymes such as ALT and GGT, which is a reasonable first screen. They cannot show fat or scarring in the liver, and a normal result does not rule out fatty liver. A liver scan and a doctor’s review answer the questions a kit cannot.
Liver health is tested in three ways: a liver function blood test shows inflammation and how well the liver works, a liver scan shows fat, size and lumps, and elastography measures stiffness, a sign of scarring. See how the tests compare.
No single test gives the full picture. A blood test can be normal even when there is fatty liver, and a scan alone does not show how the liver is working. Combining the two, with elastography if you have risk factors for scarring, is the most complete check.
Some NHS areas run community liver health checks for people at higher risk, for example adults who drink more than 14 units a week or have had hepatitis. They are not available everywhere. Otherwise your GP will arrange a liver blood test if you have symptoms.
Yes. Fatty liver, and even early scarring, can be present with completely normal liver blood tests. That is why a liver health check adds a scan, which shows fat in the liver directly, and why the Advanced package adds elastography to measure stiffness.
ALT is an enzyme released when liver cells are irritated. A raised ALT is most often caused by fatty liver, alcohol, medicines or viral hepatitis, and hard exercise can raise it briefly. Mild rises are common; your GP reads ALT with the other markers and your scan before deciding what it means.
Yes. Do not eat for 6 to 8 hours before your appointment; water is fine. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, take your usual medicines, and bring a list of everything you take, including supplements and herbal remedies, plus any earlier liver results.
Liver stiffness is measured in the Advanced package or on its own for £359. We use shear wave elastography rather than a FibroScan device: both measure liver stiffness in kPa to estimate scarring, but shear wave elastography is built into the ultrasound machine, so the area measured is seen on screen.
Consider it if you had a blood transfusion in the UK before September 1991, tattoos or piercings done with unsterile equipment, ever injected drugs, lived in or had medical treatment in a high-risk country, or have a family member with hepatitis B. The Advanced package includes both tests.
No. The liver health check includes a liver scan, but adds a 26-marker blood test, a GP consultation and a pharmacist review. If you only need imaging, for example because your GP has asked for a scan, book our Liver Ultrasound Scan on its own.
Your GP explains every finding and agrees the next steps with you. If you need specialist care, you get a formal referral letter for your NHS GP or a private hepatologist, at no extra charge. Many early liver problems, including fatty liver, improve with weight, alcohol and medication changes.
