Should I Book the Liver Health Package?

Answer these questions honestly — they will guide you to the right choice.

Have you noticed any liver-related symptoms — right upper abdominal pain, persistent bloating, unusual fatigue, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, or itchy skin?
Has a previous blood test shown abnormal liver enzymes (raised ALT, AST, or Gamma GT)?
Do you have known or suspected fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD), or risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, or persistently raised cholesterol?
Do you regularly consume alcohol, take long-term medications (e.g. statins, methotrexate), use multiple supplements, or have a family history of liver disease or hepatitis?
If you answered “yes” to ANY of these → The Liver Health Package is appropriate for you. The combination of imaging, blood markers, GP interpretation, and Pharmacist review will give you a complete picture of your liver health — and identify problems early, when they are most treatable.
If you answered “no” to all four → You may simply want a baseline screening. The package is still suitable for proactive baseline assessment if you are aged 40 or older, or you would benefit from peace of mind. For pure baseline, the General Blood Profile add-on (+£100) gives a more complete metabolic picture.

Still unsure? Call 020 7101 3377 for advice — no obligation.

Liver Function Tests Panel

Eight Key Liver Blood Markers

TL;DR

The LFT panel covers the eight clinically essential markers per BSG guidelines on abnormal liver blood tests — assessing liver cell injury, biliary tree health, and synthetic liver function comprehensively.

ALT / SGPT

Alanine Aminotransferase

The most sensitive marker of liver cell damage. Elevated ALT often the first sign of liver injury before symptoms appear.

AST / SGOT

Aspartate Transaminase

Liver and muscle injury marker. The AST/ALT ratio helps differentiate alcoholic from non-alcoholic liver disease.

BILIRUBIN

Total Bilirubin

Bile pigment elevated in jaundice, biliary obstruction, and certain liver diseases. Visible as yellowing of eyes and skin when high.

TOTAL PROTEIN

Total Protein

Sum of albumin and globulin. Abnormal levels suggest chronic liver disease, kidney disease, or nutritional issues.

ALP

Alkaline Phosphatase

Biliary tree enzyme. Elevated in cholestasis (bile flow obstruction), gallstones, and certain bone diseases.

ALBUMIN

Albumin

The liver’s main synthetic product. Low albumin suggests chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or kidney protein loss.

GLOBULIN

Globulin

Immune-related protein fraction. Elevated globulin suggests chronic inflammation, autoimmune liver disease, or chronic infection.

GGT

Gamma GT

Sensitive to alcohol-related liver damage and biliary obstruction. The most useful marker for monitoring alcohol abstinence.

Optional Add-Ons

Personalise Your Liver Health Assessment

TL;DR

Three add-ons — +£100 for general blood panel, +£195 for hepatitis screening, +£359 for FibroScan. Choose based on your specific concerns.

Optional add-ons: You do not need to decide everything before booking. These optional tests can be selected during your examination appointment, or they may be recommended by the GP in clinic after reviewing your ultrasound findings, symptoms, risk factors, and blood test requirements.

EXTENDED BLOOD PROFILE

General Blood Test Profile

+£100 add-on

Extends beyond LFTs to a comprehensive general health blood panel — assessing organ function, metabolism, and inflammation.

  • Haematology: FBC, ESR
  • Kidney: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate, Urea, Creatinine, eGFR
  • Liver: Bilirubin, ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin, Globulin
  • Bone: Calcium, Phosphate, Uric Acid, Magnesium
  • Metabolism: Glucose, Triglycerides, Cholesterol
  • Iron: Iron with TIBC
VIRAL HEPATITIS SCREENING

Hepatitis B & C Testing

+£195 add-on

Viral hepatitis screening for both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C — both can lead to chronic liver disease and liver cancer if undetected.

  • Hepatitis B Test (AUAG): Hepatitis B Surface Antigen — checks for current or past Hepatitis B infection
  • Hepatitis C Test (HEPC): Hepatitis C antibody screen — detects exposure to Hepatitis C virus
  • Recommended if you have travel exposure, occupational risk, or family history of viral hepatitis
  • Aligned with NHS hepatitis screening guidance
  • Results within 5–7 working days
FIBROSCAN — LIVER STIFFNESS

Liver Elastography (FibroScan)

+£359 add-on

Non-invasive measurement of liver stiffness — direct assessment of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis without needing a biopsy.

  • Specialised ultrasound-based test measuring liver tissue stiffness
  • Detects liver fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis
  • Recommended per NICE NG49 guidelines for fatty liver disease assessment
  • Painless, takes 10 minutes, no biopsy required
  • Same-day quantitative results

What This Liver Health Package Can and Cannot Diagnose

This section is included to make the page clearer for patients, search engines and AI answer systems. It explains what the package can assess, where further testing may be needed, and when symptoms require urgent care.

What the package can help identify

  • Fatty liver changes and signs suggestive of NAFLD / MASLD on ultrasound.
  • Gallstones, gallbladder polyps, biliary duct dilatation and some causes of right upper abdominal pain.
  • Abnormal liver blood markers such as ALT, AST, bilirubin, ALP, albumin and Gamma GT changes.
  • Potential medication, supplement or alcohol-related liver risk factors during pharmacist and GP review.
  • Whether further tests such as FibroScan, hepatitis screening, repeat LFTs or specialist referral may be appropriate.

What may need further investigation

  • Ultrasound and blood tests cannot always confirm the exact cause or stage of liver disease.
  • Cirrhosis, fibrosis and inflammatory liver disease may need FibroScan, specialist blood tests, MRI/CT or hepatology review.
  • Small lesions or early disease may not always be visible on ultrasound.
  • Abnormal findings may require NHS or private referral to a hepatologist, gastroenterologist or hospital team.
  • This package is not a replacement for emergency care if severe symptoms are present.
Compare Your Options

Liver Ultrasound vs LFT Blood Test vs FibroScan vs Full Liver Health Package

Different liver tests answer different clinical questions. This comparison helps patients understand why a combined package may be more useful than a single test alone.

Option Best for What it assesses Limitation
Liver ultrasound Fatty liver, gallstones, liver size, focal lesions and biliary obstruction signs Imaging of liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and upper abdominal organs Does not measure all blood markers or confirm fibrosis stage
LFT blood test Abnormal liver enzymes, bilirubin changes and synthetic liver function ALT, AST, bilirubin, ALP, albumin, Gamma GT and related markers Cannot show liver structure or gallstones
FibroScan add-on Known or suspected fatty liver, fibrosis risk, chronic liver disease monitoring Liver stiffness and fibrosis risk using transient elastography Does not replace imaging of the whole abdomen or GP interpretation
Full Liver Health Package Patients wanting a joined-up private liver health check in London or St Albans Ultrasound, 8-marker LFT panel, GP consultation and pharmacist medication review Further tests or referral may still be needed if results are abnormal

Why London Private Ultrasound

The Most Complete Liver Health Pathway

Our Liver Health Package brings together specialist ultrasound, comprehensive blood markers, GP integration, and a Pharmacist medication safety review — all in a single coordinated visit. Few private clinics offer this depth of liver assessment at a transparent fixed price.

Specialist-Performed Ultrasound

Your scan is performed by an experienced Consultant Sonographer or Vascular Scientist — not a generalist or trainee. Liver imaging is operator-dependent, and specialist scanning is the gold standard.

Same-Day Scan Results

Verbal ultrasound results discussed during the examination — no anxious waiting for a letter. The Sonographer explains findings live as the scan progresses.

Pharmacist Safety Layer

Few private liver packages include a structured Pharmacist medication review. Many cases of abnormal liver enzymes are drug-related — and our Pharmacist identifies these proactively.

Three Optional Add-Ons

Personalise your assessment with General Blood Profile, viral Hepatitis screening, or FibroScan elastography — based on your specific concerns and risk factors.

Integrated Written Report

One comprehensive document combining ultrasound, blood markers, GP interpretation, and Pharmacist findings — not three separate reports for you to interpret.

CQC Regulated

Fully registered with the Care Quality Commission. Medical oversight by GMC-registered Medical Director. CQC Champion ensures ongoing compliance.

From £449 all-inclusive (instead of £509 standalone — save £60). No GP referral required.

How much does the Liver Health Package cost?

The Liver Health Package costs £449 all-inclusive — instead of £509 if booked separately, saving £60. The fee includes:

  • Abdomen and Liver Ultrasound (£219 standalone)
  • GP consultation (£150 standalone)
  • Liver Function Tests blood panel (£90 standalone)
  • Pharmacist medication review (£50 standalone)

Optional add-ons are available at additional cost: General Blood Profile (+£100), Hepatitis B and C testing (+£195), FibroScan liver elastography (+£359).

What does the Abdomen and Liver Ultrasound assess?

The Abdomen and Liver Ultrasound is a comprehensive scan covering:

  • Liver: size, shape, fatty infiltration, focal lesions, cirrhotic changes
  • Gallbladder: gallstones, polyps, wall thickening, sludge
  • Biliary system: intrahepatic and extrahepatic ducts
  • Pancreas: size, focal lesions, ductal dilation
  • Spleen: size, focal lesions
  • Kidneys: cysts, stones, tumours, hydronephrosis
  • Abdominal aorta: aneurysm screening

The scan uses no radiation, is painless, and takes approximately 25–30 minutes. Performed by one of our experienced Consultant Sonographers or Vascular Scientists.

What blood tests are included in the Liver Function Tests panel?

The Liver Function Tests (LFTs) panel covers eight key markers per BSG guidelines on abnormal liver blood tests:

  • ALT (SGPT) — sensitive marker of liver cell damage
  • AST (SGOT) — liver and muscle injury marker
  • Bilirubin (Total) — bile pigment elevated in jaundice
  • Total Protein — synthetic liver function
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) — biliary tree health
  • Albumin — main synthetic liver product
  • Globulin — immune-related protein fraction
  • Gamma GT (GGT) — alcohol and biliary marker
What add-ons are available?

Three optional add-ons:

  1. General Blood Test Profile (+£100) — extends beyond LFTs to include FBC, ESR, kidney function, bone markers, glucose, lipids, and iron status.
  2. Hepatitis B and C testing (+£195) — Hepatitis B Surface Antigen and Hepatitis C antibody screen. Both viruses can lead to chronic liver disease and liver cancer if undetected.
  3. Liver Elastography (FibroScan) (+£359) — non-invasive measurement of liver stiffness, identifying liver fibrosis or cirrhosis without needing a biopsy. Recommended per NICE NG49 guidelines.
What is FibroScan and when is it recommended?

FibroScan (transient elastography) is a non-invasive ultrasound-based test that measures liver stiffness — a direct indicator of liver fibrosis (scarring). Stiffer liver tissue indicates more fibrosis.

FibroScan is particularly recommended for patients with:

  • Known fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD) — per NICE NG49
  • Chronic hepatitis B or C
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • High alcohol consumption history
  • Metabolic syndrome with obesity and diabetes

The test is painless, takes 10 minutes, and replaces the need for liver biopsy in many cases. Available as +£359 add-on.

Why is the Pharmacist medication review included?

The Pharmacist medication review is a structured assessment by our Pharmacist Prescriber, Mr Ali Aghaei MPharm, of all medications and supplements you take.

Many common medications can affect liver health, including:

  • Paracetamol at high doses
  • Statins
  • Certain antibiotics
  • Anti-fungal medications
  • NSAIDs and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Herbal supplements

The Pharmacist reviews each medication, assesses interactions and dose-related liver risk, and advises on safer alternatives where appropriate.

Who should consider the Liver Health Package?

You should consider the Liver Health Package if:

  • You have noticed liver-related symptoms (right upper abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, fatigue, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin)
  • You have known or suspected fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD)
  • You have abnormal liver enzymes on a previous blood test
  • You regularly consume alcohol and want a baseline assessment
  • You have metabolic syndrome (obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol)
  • You have a family history of liver disease
  • You take long-term medications that may affect the liver
  • You are concerned about hepatitis exposure
  • You are aged 40 or older and want a proactive liver health baseline
How long does the appointment take?

The Liver Health Package is delivered across approximately 90–105 minutes on the day:

  • 25–30 minutes — Abdomen and Liver Ultrasound
  • 10–15 minutes — Blood sample collection
  • 20–25 minutes — GP consultation reviewing initial findings
  • 15–20 minutes — Pharmacist medication review

The integrated written report follows within 3–5 working days once LFT results return.

How should I prepare?
  • Fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment (water permitted)
  • Continue your usual medications unless specifically advised otherwise
  • Bring a complete list of all medications including over-the-counter, supplements, and herbal remedies
  • Wear loose, two-piece clothing for easy abdominal access
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the appointment for accurate Gamma GT testing
  • Bring any prior liver scans, blood test results, or hospital reports
How does this work with the National Health Service?

If your Liver Health Package identifies a condition requiring NHS specialist management — such as significant fibrosis, suspected cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, or any finding requiring hepatology specialist input — we generate a same-day formal referral letter for your GP at no additional charge.

The referral is significantly stronger because it includes ultrasound imaging findings, comprehensive blood results, GP clinical interpretation, and Pharmacist medication review — meaning your specialist appointment is more productive from the first visit.
