View Postpartum Scan →Low-Risk vs High-Risk NHS Pathways
Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but navigating Obstetric care for the first time can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here is what to expect from your routine NHS pathways, and how private scans can complement your care.
Monitoring in Low-Risk Pregnancies
The NHS provides two routine ultrasound scans for low-risk women: a First Trimester Scan (11-14 weeks) to check development and screen for conditions like Down’s syndrome, and a Second Trimester Scan (18-21 weeks) to assess the baby’s anatomy. After these, your midwife monitors growth through Symphysis-Fundal Height (SFH) measurements. Many parents choose private ultrasound to supplement SFH measurements, as ultrasound is far more precise.
Monitoring in High-Risk Pregnancies
Some pregnancies require closer monitoring due to previous complicated pregnancies, conditions like gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, or concerns about growth. If you are on the high-risk pathway, the NHS provides regular ultrasounds and consultant reviews. However, you can still book private scans if you want additional reassurance between hospital appointments.
| London Private Ultrasound | Typical Low-Risk NHS Pathway | |
|---|---|---|
| Scan frequency | Book whenever you need reassurance (e.g. 6-11 weeks, or 24+ weeks for growth) | Typically two routine scans (11-14 & 18-21 weeks) |
| Waiting time | Same-day / next-day availability | Scheduled according to gestation timeline |
| Guests allowed | Partners, family, and friends warmly welcome | Usually restricted to one adult guest |
| Gender & Bonding | Highly accurate gender reveal and 3D/4D available | Not routinely offered for gender or bonding |
| Results | Verbally in the scan room, report within 24 hours | Added to your maternity notes |
The NHS provides excellent care. Our private scans are here to complement your NHS appointments, offering tailored ultrasound services to give you peace of mind throughout your pregnancy.
How it works
1 · Choose & book
Pick your scan based on your weeks of gestation and book online, by phone or WhatsApp. No GP referral needed.
2 · Pre-scan conversation
Before the scan begins, a short conversation confirms the scan booked is the right one for your stage of pregnancy and needs.
3 · Visit a clinic
Attend our Central London or St Albans clinic, 7 days a week.
4 · Your scan
Performed by an experienced consultant or sonographer. A female sonographer is available on request.
5 · Results in the scan room
We explain the findings verbally at the time, with the written report sent within 24 hours.
6 · Personalised recommendations
Based on findings, the clinician explains what they mean for you and gives clear recommendations or onward care guidance.
What happens during your scan
A clear, honest walk-through of what to expect, so you can arrive prepared and at ease. You are encouraged to bring your partner or family to share the experience.
1 · Arrival & welcome
You’re greeted by our reception team and given any preparation guidance specific to your scan. If you’d like a chaperone, just ask.
2 · A short clinical chat
Your ultrasound specialist asks about your symptoms, gestational age, and relevant history. They explain exactly how the scan will be performed.
3 · Preparing for the scan
You’re shown to a private scan room. For early scans (under 12 weeks), you must attend with a full bladder. An internal (transvaginal) scan may sometimes be required for early viability, which we will discuss with you first.
4 · The ultrasound itself
Warm gel is applied to your tummy. The probe glides gently over the area while real-time images of your baby appear on the screen. Most scans take 15–30 minutes.
5 · Explanation in the scan room
Your sonographer explains what they are seeing verbally, in the scan room, showing you the heartbeat and movements. You can ask anything you like.
6 · Your written report in 24 hours
Your full written medical report follows within 24 hours, securely delivered and perfectly formatted to share with your NHS midwife or doctor.
Comfort and dignity: a chaperone is always available, female sonographers can be requested, and you can pause or stop the scan at any time. If you have specific access needs, please call 020 7101 3377 when you book.
