A pancreas health check is a two-visit assessment of your pancreas. It combines a pancreas ultrasound, which looks for signs of pancreatitis, cysts, gallstones and widened ducts, a blood panel with amylase and lipase, a faecal elastase stool test, a 30-minute GP appointment and a pharmacist medication review.

An abdominal ultrasound shows the structure of the pancreas and the organs around it. The Pancreas Health Check adds the enzyme blood tests, a stool test for pancreas function and a GP and pharmacist who go through your actual results.

Partly, and how much depends on you and your anatomy. The pancreas lies deep behind the stomach and bowel, so ultrasound is a good first test but not a complete one.
Often searched for as a pancreatitis ultrasound, the scan looks for signs of pancreatitis, a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed, as well as cysts and masses. Your sonographer measures the pancreas, checks its texture and duct, and looks at the gallbladder and bile ducts.
A swollen, darker gland and fluid around it. Blood tests for amylase and lipase help confirm the diagnosis, and severe pain needs A&E rather than a routine scan.
Calcium deposits, an uneven texture, a shrunken gland and a widened or irregular pancreatic duct, which point to long-term inflammation.
Gallstones are a common cause of pancreatitis. The scan checks the gallbladder and whether the bile duct is widened by a stone or a blockage.
Fluid-filled cysts, including pseudocysts after pancreatitis, are measured and checked for solid parts. Many are harmless and only need monitoring.
A mass, usually in the head of the pancreas, or a widened duct can be flagged for urgent specialist imaging. Ultrasound cannot confirm cancer on its own.
The liver, kidneys and spleen are checked, because fatty liver, gallstones or kidney problems can overlap with pancreatic symptoms.
Pancreas symptoms can overlap with gallbladder, liver, kidney and blood sugar problems, so the panel looks wider than the pancreatic enzymes alone.

The check suits adults with pancreas-type symptoms or risk factors, and anyone who wants a thorough baseline after pancreatitis or gallstones.
Pain in the upper tummy that spreads to the back, comes and goes, or is worse after eating.
Losing weight without trying, or going off your food, should always be checked.
Pale, greasy stools that are hard to flush can be a sign that the pancreas is not making enough enzymes.
Gallstones are a common cause of pancreatitis, and a check after an attack looks at recovery and any lasting damage.
Heavy drinking is a major cause of pancreatitis. A baseline shows how the pancreas and liver are doing.
New diabetes with weight loss, especially over 50, or a close relative with pancreatic cancer, is a reason to have the pancreas looked at.
Do not wait for a routine appointment if you have sudden, severe tummy pain that spreads to your back, especially with vomiting, a high temperature or a fast heartbeat. Call 999 or go to A&E. For yellow skin or eyes, ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111.
Avoid eating for 6 hours before your first visit, because food and gas make the pancreas harder to see. You can drink small sips of water and take your usual medication. If you have diabetes, tell us when you book so we can plan your appointment time. Wear loose clothing that is easy to lift at the waist.
Bring earlier scans, blood results, GP letters and a list of your medicines, so your sonographer, GP and pharmacist can compare them with today’s findings.
The ultrasound takes 15 to 25 minutes, with warm gel and a handheld probe over the upper tummy. You may be asked to hold your breath or turn on your side. A blood sample is taken and you are given the stool kit. Your sonographer explains the scan findings before you leave.
A 30-minute face-to-face appointment once every report is ready. Your GP goes through the ultrasound, blood and stool results together, and your pharmacist reviews your medicines.

Your GP explains each result at Visit 2 and ties it to your symptoms. Most results fall into one of three groups.
The pancreas looks normal where seen, enzymes and function tests are in range and nothing else needs action. Your GP still advises what to do if symptoms continue.
Your GP sets out next steps, which may include repeat tests, an add-on such as MRI or a gastroenterologist, or a referral letter at no extra charge.
We explain this on the day and advise urgent specialist imaging or referral. A scan or blood test cannot confirm cancer on its own.

A pancreas health check combines a pancreas ultrasound, a blood panel with amylase and lipase, a faecal elastase stool test, a 30-minute GP appointment and a pharmacist medication review. It runs over two visits, so your GP reads every result together and explains what it means.
Partly. The head and body of the pancreas are usually seen, especially if you have fasted, but bowel gas can hide the tail. If any part is not clearly seen, your report says so, and an MRI or CT can be arranged if you need a fuller view.
It can show signs of pancreatitis, such as a swollen gland, fluid around it, calcium deposits and a widened pancreatic duct, and it looks for gallstones, a common cause. Blood tests for amylase and lipase help confirm it, which is why the two are combined here.
Ultrasound can show a mass, a cyst or a widened duct, mainly in the head of the pancreas. It can miss small tumours and those in the tail, so a normal scan does not rule cancer out. If you have jaundice or unexplained weight loss, see a GP urgently.

Ultrasound is a quick first test with no radiation. CT with contrast and MRI or MRCP show the whole gland and its ducts more reliably, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) gives the finest detail and can take samples. We can arrange an MRI, CT or EUS referral if your results suggest you need one.
