Growth and Wellbeing scan
Pregnancy Growth and Wellbeing scan (24-36 weeks)
In the 3rd trimester we can monitor the growth of your baby by measuring the head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length. This will help determine if your baby’s growth rate is consistent with your estimated due date as well as give an estimated weight of your baby.
With this scan we also check the blood flow to your baby to ensure the placenta is functioning as we expect.
We examine the amniotic fluid level around your baby as this can be an indicator for gestational diabetes or problems with the placenta function.
We look at the position of your baby and the position of your placenta. In some cases a transvaginal scan may be needed to exclude a low placenta or a rare but dangerous condition called vasa praevia. This is when unprotected fetal vessels are close to or covering the cervix. If your sonographer is unable to exclude these conditions by scanning transabdominally then she may advise the need for an internal ultrasound. Both exams are is extremely safe and comfortable for you and your baby
All of this information together gives us a better idea on the wellbeing of your baby.

More Information |
There are many reasons why you would wish to have a wellbeing scan performed in the 3rd trimester of your pregnancy:
The most common finding at this stage is a normally developing baby with normal appearances for this stage of the pregnancy. On a rare occasion, we may notice your baby’s not gaining enough weight or gaining weight too quickly, or some structural abnormalities could be identified (that were either not possible to identify earlier or developed after your previous scan) in which case you will be notified and advised to be referred to a tertiary centre for further evaluation.
In most cases a blood test will not be necessary, however in some situations we may recommend one.
Wellbeing Ultrasound Scan is performed transabdominally (on top of your tummy), for which we advise to have a nearly empty bladder.
The Ultrasound Specialist will explain the procedure before your scan. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your tummy, so that the specialist will be able to produce high quality diagnostic ultrasound images and assess your baby. You should not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. The Wellbeing Ultrasound Scan is regularly completed within 15 minutes, depending on the position of your baby. Our Sonographer will recommend the best course of action depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
You will get the results of the scan after the examination along with a hard copy of the report. We will also email you a digital copy of the report with relevant images within 24 hrs.
Ultrasound scan itself does not harm the pregnancy. Yours and your baby’s safety is one of our top priorities, therefore we strictly adhere to BMUS guidelines for the safe use of Diagnostic Ultrasound Equipment and scanning times, as well as respect ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
If you are concerned, we recommend further wellbeing scans 3-4 weeks apart until 39 weeks to check the growth of your baby.
