A pelvic ultrasound that detects, measures and maps your fibroids by number, size, location and type, and checks the uterus, endometrium and ovaries. Transabdominal, with a transvaginal scan only where it adds information and only with your consent.
A comprehensive profile: full blood count and ferritin to check for the iron-deficiency anaemia that heavy fibroid bleeding causes, thyroid function (TSH and free T4) because thyroid problems can drive abnormal bleeding, plus HbA1c, vitamin D and a 24-parameter biochemistry panel with a full lipid profile for your wider health.
A GMC-registered GP reads the scan, the bloods and your symptoms together, gives you a clear diagnosis, explains what your fibroids mean and answers your questions – the interpretation that imaging on its own cannot give you.
Where medical management is appropriate, we review your medication and can prescribe, from tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding to hormonal options. You leave with a written report and your options set out and, if a procedure is the better route, a referral letter to the right specialist – that treatment is then booked separately with them.

A pelvic ultrasound is the first-line test: it confirms fibroids and records their number, size, location and type. Bloods check for anaemia from heavy bleeding and help exclude other causes such as thyroid disease. Complex or very large fibroids may need a 3D scan or MRI, which your report will flag.
Fibroids are graded 0 to 8 by the FIGO system. Submucosal ones (types 0 to 2) bulge into the cavity and most affect bleeding and fertility; intramural and subserosal ones (types 3 to 6) sit in or on the wall; a type 7 is a subserosal fibroid on a stalk; hybrid grades such as 2 to 5 span both the cavity and the outer surface.
Your GP explains the findings and your options in plain terms. Many fibroids need only monitoring or medication. Where symptoms are significant, the right option depends on the fibroid type – and we arrange the onward referral so you are not left to organise it yourself.
Options range from watchful waiting and medication (tranexamic acid, hormonal treatment, the hormonal coil) to procedures such as hysteroscopic removal, uterine artery embolisation, myomectomy or, in some cases, hysterectomy. The right choice depends on your symptoms, the fibroid type and whether you are planning a pregnancy.
There is very little to do. The scan and the bloods are done together in one visit of about 45 to 60 minutes, and these three things keep it running smoothly.
A comfortably full bladder gives a clearer view of the uterus on a transabdominal scan. You do not need to fast – these bloods are not fasting tests.

A female sonographer is available at no extra cost – just mention it at booking. Wear something two-piece so the lower abdomen is easy to reach.

The FIGO system grades fibroids from 0 to 8 by position. A type 7 is a subserosal fibroid attached to the outer surface of the uterus by a stalk, which is called pedunculated. Because it sits outside the cavity it is less likely to affect bleeding or fertility, but a large one can cause pressure or bulk symptoms. The right treatment depends on its size and your symptoms.
Types 2 to 5 run from the edge of the cavity (submucosal) through the muscle wall (intramural). Submucosal fibroids that affect the cavity are often treated by hysteroscopic removal; intramural ones may be managed with medication, uterine artery embolisation or a myomectomy depending on size, symptoms and fertility plans.
