About our Abdomen Wall Ultrasound Scan
An Abdominal Wall Ultrasound Scan is a specialized imaging test designed to assess the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, commonly referred to as diastasis recti. This non-invasive procedure is crucial for diagnosing and evaluating the severity of this condition—particularly in postpartum women, but also in men and individuals following significant weight changes or abdominal surgeries. The scan helps determine the extent of the muscle separation and guides treatment planning.
What is Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti is the separation of the two large parallel bands of muscles that run down the center of the abdomen (rectus abdominis). This condition often occurs during pregnancy but can also result from excessive abdominal pressure in other situations. Common symptoms include:
- A visible bulge or “pooch” in the abdomen, especially when straining
- Weak abdominal muscles or poor core strength
- Postural issues or lower back pain
Why is a Diastasis Recti Ultrasound Important?
This scan plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of abdominal muscle separation:
- Accurate Measurement: Precisely measures the distance between muscles to evaluate severity.
- Treatment Guidance: Helps determine whether physiotherapy, rehabilitation, or surgery is appropriate.
- Progress Monitoring: Tracks muscle healing and improvement during or after treatment.
- Rule Out Other Conditions: Differentiates diastasis recti from hernias and other abdominal issues.
Who Should Consider a Diastasis Recti Ultrasound Scan?
This scan is ideal for individuals who:
- Are postpartum and experiencing core weakness or abdominal bulging
- Have had abdominal surgery or rapid weight loss and suspect muscle separation
- Experience lower back pain, pelvic instability, or postural issues
- Are preparing for rehabilitation or surgical treatment for diastasis recti
- Want to monitor recovery and progress from physical therapy or core training
Benefits of a Diastasis Recti Ultrasound Scan
- Safe and Non-Invasive: Uses sound waves—no radiation exposure.
- Highly Accurate: Delivers real-time, clear, and measurable imaging results.
- Supports Personalised Care: Enables tailored treatment plans based on severity.
- Ideal for Postpartum Recovery: A reliable way to track your progress safely after birth.
