What the scan shows

What Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Detect?

Your sonographer checks each organ in your upper abdomen in turn and explains what they see as they go.

Liver conditions

Fatty liver, cysts and other lesions, and signs of longer-term liver disease. Your sonographer checks the liver’s size, outline and texture, which often explains raised liver blood tests.

Gallstones & gallbladder

Gallstones, sludge, a thickened or inflamed gallbladder wall and widened bile ducts. Ultrasound is the usual first test when pain sits under the right ribs or after fatty meals.

Pancreas changes

Swelling, cysts or a widened pancreatic duct. Bowel gas can hide part of the pancreas, which is one reason fasting before the scan helps.

Kidney problems

Kidney stones, cysts and swelling caused by a blockage (hydronephrosis). Both kidneys are measured and compared, which helps with flank pain or abnormal kidney blood tests.

Spleen enlargement

An enlarged spleen, cysts and other visible changes. An enlarged spleen can point to infection, liver disease or a blood condition, so your report explains what to check next.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm

Widening of the main artery in your abdomen, which usually causes no symptoms. Your sonographer measures its width, so a swelling can be found early and monitored.

Why ultrasound first

Benefits of an Abdominal Ultrasound (Stomach Scan)

For most tummy symptoms and abnormal blood tests, an abdominal ultrasound is the simplest first test.

  • No radiationUltrasound uses sound waves, so it is safe to repeat and suitable when you want to avoid X-rays or CT.
  • Painless and non-invasiveNo needles, no injections and no recovery time. You can eat, drive and go back to work straight afterwards.
  • Several organs in one scanYour liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and aorta are all checked in about 20 minutes.
  • Answers on the same dayYour sonographer talks you through the findings before you leave, and the written report follows within 24 hours.
  • Sees organs in real timeUltrasound shows organs as they move, which helps when checking the gallbladder or tracking where pain comes from.
  • A clear next stepIf anything needs more tests, your report says which ones, so your GP or specialist can act quickly.

Who Needs an Abdominal (Stomach) Ultrasound?

Most people book because of a symptom, an abnormal blood test or a finding that needs checking.

Upper abdominal pain

Pain under the right ribs or into the right shoulder blade can point to gallstones or the liver.

Bloating, nausea or indigestion

Ongoing symptoms after fatty meals can come from the gallbladder, liver or pancreas.

Abnormal blood tests

Raised liver enzymes or abnormal kidney results often need a scan to find the cause.

Yellow eyes or dark urine

Jaundice, dark urine or pale stools mean the liver and bile ducts need checking.

Kidney pain or blood in urine

Flank pain and suspected kidney stones can be assessed in the same scan.

Monitoring or reassurance

Rechecking known gallstones, fatty liver, cysts or the aorta, or simply peace of mind.

Do not wait for a routine scan if you have severe or sudden abdominal pain, fever with jaundice, vomiting blood, black stools or collapse. Call 999 or go to A&E.

Your appointment

How to Prepare for Your Abdominal Ultrasound

Try not to eat for 4 to 6 hours before your scan. An empty stomach lets your gallbladder fill up and keeps gas in your bowel low, so we can see everything clearly. Sips of water and your usual medicines are fine.

1Before you come

Skip food, keep sipping water

No food, tea, coffee, fizzy drinks or chewing gum. If you have booked a combined scan, drink about a litre of water an hour before so your bladder is full.

2When you arrive

A quick chat about your symptoms

Wear something loose and bring any earlier scans or blood results. If you have diabetes, tell us when you book and we will offer an earlier slot.

3About 20 minutes

The scan itself

You lie on your back while your sonographer glides a probe over your tummy with warm gel. You may be asked to take a deep breath or roll slightly. It does not hurt.

After your scan

  • Right afterVerbal results

Your sonographer talks you through what they saw and answers your questions before you leave.

  • Within 24 hoursWritten report by email

A formal report with key images, ready to share with your GP or specialist.

  • If anything needs follow-upClear next steps

We explain what was found, your options and who to speak to next, so you are not left wondering.

Questions

Abdominal Ultrasound Scan: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private abdominal ultrasound cost in London?

A private abdominal ultrasound in London usually costs about £150 to £260, depending on the clinic and what is included. At London Private Ultrasound it is £219, all-inclusive: the scan, verbal results on the day and a written report within 24 hours.

Do I need a GP referral for an abdominal ultrasound?

No. You can book a private abdominal ultrasound directly online, by phone on 020 7101 3377 or on WhatsApp. Bring any GP letters, earlier scans or blood results so your sonographer has the full picture.

Is an abdominal ultrasound the same as a stomach scan?

Yes, people use both names for the same scan. It looks at the organs around the stomach, such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen. The stomach itself holds air and food, so ulcers or gastritis need an endoscopy instead.

What does an abdominal ultrasound show?

It shows the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and abdominal aorta. Your sonographer checks the size, shape and texture of each organ and looks for stones, cysts, swelling, fatty change and widening of the aorta.

Why would a doctor order an abdominal ultrasound?

Usually to find the cause of abdominal pain, bloating or nausea, to check abnormal liver or kidney blood tests, or to look for gallstones or kidney stones. It is also used to monitor a known finding such as fatty liver, a cyst or the aorta.

How long should I fast before an abdominal ultrasound?

Fast for 4 to 6 hours. Small sips of water and essential medication are fine. Fasting lets the gallbladder fill and reduces bowel gas, which gives clearer pictures of the gallbladder and pancreas.

What happens if I eat before my abdominal ultrasound?

The scan can usually still go ahead, but the gallbladder may have emptied and bowel gas can hide the pancreas, so some parts may be harder to see. Tell your sonographer what you ate. If the view is limited, your report will say so.

Can an abdominal ultrasound detect gallstones and fatty liver?

Yes. Ultrasound is the usual first test for gallstones, and a full gallbladder check is included in the £219 scan, so there is no separate gallbladder scan fee. It also shows signs of fatty liver. Measuring liver stiffness needs a FibroScan.

Can an abdominal ultrasound detect kidney stones?

Yes, it shows most kidney stones and any swelling of the kidney caused by a blockage. Very small stones, or stones in the ureter, can be harder to see. For the whole urinary tract, book the abdominal and urinary tract scan.

Can an abdominal ultrasound detect cancer?

It can show a lump or an abnormal area in an organ, but it is not a definitive cancer test. If something needs a closer look, your report will recommend the next step, such as CT, MRI, blood tests or a specialist review.

Do you get abdominal ultrasound results straight away?

Yes. Your sonographer gives you verbal results before you leave. The written report with key images follows within 24 hours, ready to share with your GP or specialist.

What happens if my abdominal ultrasound finds something?

Your sonographer explains it at the appointment, and the report says what should happen next and how soon. Many findings, such as gallstones, fatty liver or simple kidney cysts, are common and manageable. Your GP or specialist arranges any follow-up.

Is an abdominal ultrasound safe?

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, with no radiation and no needles. It is painless; you may feel light pressure from the probe. You can eat, drive and go back to work straight afterwards.

Is an abdominal ultrasound better than a CT scan?

For most abdominal pain and abnormal blood tests, ultrasound is the right first test: it is quick, radiation-free and available the same day. CT uses X-rays and shows the bowel in more detail. If CT would help, your report will say so.

Can children have an abdominal ultrasound?

Yes, ultrasound is safe for children. Online booking is for patients aged 18 and over, so for a child please call 020 7101 3377 or message us on WhatsApp and the team will advise on the right appointment.

Can I get a same-day abdominal ultrasound near me?

Often, yes. Both clinics, 27 Welbeck Street in Central London and Victoria Street in St Albans, are open 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, with same-day and next-day appointments. Call 020 7101 3377 to book today.

Medical disclaimer. This page is general information and does not replace individual medical advice. Bowel gas can limit the view of the pancreas and bowel, and ultrasound does not diagnose cancer on its own. A normal scan cannot rule out every condition. Call 999 or go to A&E rather than booking a routine scan if you have severe or sudden abdominal pain, fever with jaundice, vomiting blood, black stools, collapse or persistent vomiting.
