Blood markers need interpretation alongside symptoms and examination. Inflammation results are not specific to the spleen. Viral antibodies may reflect previous exposure; a positive result does not automatically mean an active infection. Recent exposure can also affect test reliability. Discuss testing windows, consent and any follow-up with your clinician.
In Standard and Advanced , the scan examines the spleen’s size and appearance within an upper abdominal assessment. The clinician may ask you to change position or hold a breath to improve the view.
A scan cannot measure the spleen’s immune function or rule out all blood disorders or cancers. A normal ultrasound does not explain every cause of pain or fatigue.
A clinician may consider spleen investigations for persistent discomfort under the left ribs, a previously enlarged spleen or unexplained blood-count changes. These symptoms have many possible causes; the package is not a diagnosis in itself.
Tell the team about any fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, unusual bruising, recent infections or existing medical conditions. Prompt medical review may be more appropriate than booking tests yourself.
If you have a known enlarged spleen, ask your treating clinician about activity restrictions, including contact sports.
For Standard and Advanced , usually fast for 4–6 hours before the upper abdominal scan; small sips of water are allowed. Follow your appointment instructions. Ask for individual advice if you have diabetes or take medicines with food. Do not change prescribed medicines without advice.
Bring previous scans, blood results and a medication list. Standard and Advanced include an external ultrasound using gel and a handheld probe. The ultrasound uses no ionising radiation. Blood collection involves a needle and can cause brief discomfort or bruising.
The ultrasound report is usually available within 24 hours. Routine and viral blood tests have different turnaround times. Confirm expected dates when booking; complete package results are not necessarily available on the day.
Your 20 -30 minute GP consultation is scheduled for the first Friday after testing, in person or virtually. Confirm arrangements and how any pending results will be followed up. The GP advises whether you need monitoring, further tests or specialist care.

It assesses spleen size and appearance and can identify enlargement, cysts or other visible focal changes. Some findings require further imaging or specialist assessment. Ultrasound cannot measure every aspect of spleen function or exclude every illness.
