What Is a Full Body Ultrasound Scan? (& What It Covers)

A full body ultrasound scan is a series of separate, radiation-free ultrasound examinations completed during one appointment. It assesses selected organs and blood vessels rather than every part of the body.

A full body ultrasound scan can be a useful way to get a broad look at several internal organs in one appointment, but the name can be a little misleading.

It does not scan every part of the body, and different clinics may include different organs or scans in their version of the test.

This guide explains what a full body ultrasound usually includes, what it cannot show well, how it compares with MRI and CT, and how to make sense of the report you receive afterwards.

What is a full body ultrasound scan?

A full body ultrasound scan is really a series of separate ultrasound checks done during one appointment. The sonographer moves through a set of organs and blood vessels one by one rather than taking one continuous look at the entire body.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. It does not use radiation, and for an external scan, the probe is moved over the skin with gel to help the sound waves travel properly.

Most people find it painless, although pressure can feel uncomfortable if a tender area is being examined

Is a full body ultrasound the same as a full body scan?

Not exactly. A full body ultrasound, unlike a full body scan, is usually focused on the organs ultrasound can see best, such as the thyroid, abdomen, kidneys, bladder, pelvis, and certain blood vessels. It is best thought of as a broad screening scan, not a complete check of every organ in the body

The exact protocol varies between clinics, but a more comprehensive full body ultrasound often includes the following areas.

Thyroid and neck

The thyroid is checked for enlargement, nodules, cysts, and changes in texture. The neck lymph nodes and salivary glands may also be looked at during the same part of the scan.

Thyroid nodules are common, and most are benign, but ultrasound is useful because it helps show whether a nodule looks low risk or whether it needs follow-up. This area can also be booked on its own as a thyroid and neck ultrasound scan.

Carotid arteries

Some full body packages include a Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries in the neck. This looks at blood flow and checks for plaque or narrowing.

This is one of the more useful vascular parts of the scan because carotid disease can be silent for a long time. It is also one of the features that is sometimes missing from cheaper packages, so it is worth checking exactly what is included.

Liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen

The liver is assessed for size and appearance, including signs of fatty change, cysts, or other abnormalities. The gallbladder is checked for stones, sludge, and inflammation, and the bile ducts are measured if needed.

Ultrasound is the standard first test for gallstones, which is why fasting before the scan matters so much. The pancreas and spleen are also assessed, although the pancreas can be harder to see clearly if bowel gas gets in the way.

Together these organs make up a standard abdominal ultrasound scan, and the liver alone can be assessed in more depth with a dedicated liver ultrasound scan.

Abdominal aorta

The abdominal aorta is measured to check for widening. An aorta measuring 3.0 cm or more is generally considered an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

This is an important part of the scan because aneurysms often cause no symptoms until they become a serious problem. That is one reason abdominal aortic measurement is such a valuable part of a screening ultrasound.

Kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract

Both kidneys are examined for size, shape, cysts, stones, swelling, or other abnormalities. The bladder is checked for wall changes, stones, and how much urine remains after you empty it.

That last measurement, called post-void residual volume, can be especially helpful when someone has urinary symptoms or possible prostate enlargement.

Pelvic organs in women

In women, the uterus and ovaries are usually assessed through the abdomen as part of a full body protocol. This can show fibroids, ovarian cysts, larger masses, and some changes in the lining of the uterus.

Because this is a transabdominal scan, a full bladder is needed to give a better view. If there is a specific gynaecological question, a dedicated pelvic ultrasound scan or transvaginal scan usually gives a clearer result.

Testes and prostate in men

In men, the testes can be checked for cysts, masses, or other visible abnormalities. The prostate may also be assessed, although this is usually a transabdominal view, rather than the more detailed transrectal type used in some specialist examinations.

If either area is your main concern, a testicular ultrasound scan or a prostate and bladder ultrasound scan gives a fuller assessment.

Lymph nodes

Accessible lymph nodes may also be examined for size, shape, and internal appearance. Enlarged nodes are not always serious, but they can sometimes point to infection, inflammation, or something that needs further assessment

What a full body ultrasound cannot show

As many benefits as the full body ultrasound scan carries, there are some things that this test does not show:

Assessing heart structure and function

A standard full body ultrasound does not properly assess the heart chambers, valves, or pumping function. If the heart is the concern, the right test is usually an echocardiogram, which is a separate examination.

The bowel

Ultrasound is not a reliable way to assess the bowel in detail. If someone has persistent bowel habit changes, rectal bleeding, or unexplained weight loss, other investigations such as colonoscopy or CT are usually more appropriate.

The lungs

Ultrasound cannot assess the lungs well because air blocks sound waves. If the problem is breathlessness, cough, or chest symptoms, the usual tests are a chest X-ray, CT, or another appropriate respiratory assessment.

The brain, spine, and bones

Ultrasound does not pass through bone, so it cannot properly assess the brain, spinal cord, or skeleton. MRI is usually the better choice if those areas are the main concern.

The adrenal glands

The adrenal glands sit deep in the abdomen and are often difficult to see clearly on ultrasound. CT or MRI is usually more reliable if those glands need a detailed look.

Early liver scarring

Ultrasound can spot fatty liver well, but it does not reliably measure early scarring or fibrosis. If fibrosis is a concern, a FibroScan or shear wave elastography is usually more useful.

A definite cancer diagnosis

Ultrasound can identify suspicious masses, cysts, or unusual changes, but it cannot confirm a cancer diagnosis on its own. If something looks concerning, more imaging and sometimes a biopsy are usually needed.

Blood tests

An ultrasound scan shows structure, not chemistry. That means it cannot replace blood tests, which look at organ function, inflammation, liver enzymes, and other markers.

Full body ultrasound vs MRI vs CT

These scans are often compared as if one is simply “better” than the others, but reality is that they answer different questions. Here’s a quick breakdown:

For a broad first look at the abdominal organs, thyroid, pelvis, and certain blood vessels, ultrasound is often the most practical starting point. If the concern is the brain, spine, or joints, MRI is usually a better fit.

Who a full body ultrasound scan is for

A full body ultrasound can be useful if you want a general structural baseline, especially if you:

  • Have a family history of cancer, liver, kidney or cardiovascular disease

  • Have non-specific symptoms such as persistent bloating, fatigue, discomfort or urinary changes that have not been pinned down

  • Want a structural baseline you can compare against in future years

  • Are approaching or past 40 and have never had internal imaging

  • Are managing a known finding and want to monitor it without waiting

  • Need screening for insurance, occupational or pre-travel purposes

You do not need to be unwell to benefit. A meaningful proportion of findings on these scans, particularly fatty liver, gallstones, kidney cysts, thyroid nodules and early aortic widening, cause no symptoms at the stage where they are easiest to act on.

When another test is better

If you have one clear symptom in one location, a targeted test is usually a better choice than a broad scan. For example, right-sided upper abdominal pain may be better assessed with an abdominal ultrasound scan, while a neck lump may need a dedicated neck or thyroid scan.

Ultimately, a full body ultrasound is a broad screening tool, not the fastest way to solve a single well-defined problem.

What happens on the day of your full-body ultrasound

When you arrive, the sonographer will ask about your symptoms and any previous scans.

They will then apply gel to your skin and move the probe across the areas being examined.

You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change position so the organs can be seen more clearly.

What to expect during the ultrasound scan

How to read your full body ultrasound report

Most ultrasound reports use a few technical terms, but the overall message is usually straightforward. Words like “unremarkable” or “within normal limits” mean the area looked normal on the scan, while phrases such as “limited by bowel gas” or “suboptimal views” mean the sonographer could not see that area clearly enough to give a full assessment.

A few other terms come up often. Echogenicity describes how bright something looks on the image, hyperechoic means brighter than expected, and hypoechoic means darker than expected.

Anechoic usually means fluid-filled, which is why a simple cyst often looks like a black pocket on ultrasound.

You may also see terms like fatty liver or hepatic steatosis, hydronephrosis for swelling in the kidney drainage system, or splenomegaly for an enlarged spleen. If the report says something is limited by bowel gas, it does not automatically mean something is wrong — it usually means air in the bowel blocked part of the view, which is a common limitation of ultrasound.

What a full body ultrasound scan costs in the UK

A private full-body ultrasound in the UK generally costs between £400 and £900. The range is wide because clinics include very different things under the same name, so a straight price comparison is usually misleading.

A package covering the abdomen only is not comparable to a protocol that also covers the thyroid, pelvis and carotids, even though both may be advertised as a full body ultrasound.

What does a full body ultrasound scan actually show?

It shows what these look like, not how they are functioning chemically.

Is a full body ultrasound scan worth it?

It is less useful if you have one specific localised symptom, where a targeted scan gives a better answer, or if your concern is the heart, lungs, bowel or brain, none of which this scan assesses.

Can a full body ultrasound detect cancer?

It can detect masses, cysts and unusual changes in several organs, and can often indicate whether something looks more or less suspicious. It cannot confirm a diagnosis. That requires further imaging and, in most cases, a biopsy. It is also not a whole-body cancer screen, because it cannot assess the bowel, lungs, brain or bones.

Does a full body ultrasound scan include the heart?

No. Assessing the heart chambers, valves and pumping function requires a dedicated echocardiogram, which is a separate examination. Some premium packages add one; standard full body ultrasound scans do not include it.

Full body ultrasound or full body MRI, which is better?

They answer different questions. Ultrasound is faster, cheaper, radiation-free, needs no referral and reads soft tissue organs and blood flow well. MRI covers a broader range of tissue, including the brain, spine and joints, but costs several times more, takes longer and usually needs a referral. Why do I have to fast before the scan?

Eating makes the gallbladder contract and empty, which can hide smaller gallstones completely. Fasting keeps it distended so stones are far easier to see. It also reduces bowel gas, which is the main obstacle to imaging the pancreas and deeper structures.

Does a normal result mean I am healthy?

It means no structural abnormality was seen in the organs examined, which is genuinely reassuring. It does not rule out conditions in the areas ultrasound cannot assess, or conditions that show up in blood chemistry rather than on imaging. No single test covers everything.

How often should I have a full body ultrasound?

There is no national guideline, because it is not an NHS screening programme. Many people have one annually as a baseline. If a previous scan found something needing monitoring, follow the specific interval your consultant recommends for that finding rather than a general rule.

Is a full body ultrasound safe?

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, involves no injections, and nothing enters the body. There are no known risks from diagnostic ultrasound at the frequencies used in clinical practice, which is why it can be repeated as often as is clinically sensible.

Do I need a GP referral?
