Is a postpartum scan useful after a caesarean section?
A postpartum pelvic ultrasound may be useful after caesarean birth if there is pain, bleeding, fever, concern about pelvic collections or a need to assess recovery. Please seek urgent maternity assessment for severe symptoms.
Is the scan internal or external?
A postpartum pelvic ultrasound may be performed transabdominally and, where clinically appropriate and with consent, transvaginally for better pelvic detail. The sonographer will explain the approach before proceeding.
Do I need a referral?
No GP referral is required for private booking. However, you should continue postnatal care with your midwife, GP or maternity unit and seek urgent help for severe or worsening symptoms.

Can the scan be done if I am still bleeding?
Postpartum bleeding does not automatically prevent ultrasound, but please tell the clinic when booking so the team can advise on suitability and timing. Heavy bleeding should be assessed urgently through maternity or emergency services.
Does the scan replace my six-week postnatal check?
No. A private postpartum ultrasound does not replace your routine GP postnatal check, midwife care or hospital follow-up. It provides imaging information that may support your ongoing care.
