Testicular ultrasound
Standard diagnostic testicular/scrotal ultrasound without elastography.
£219
Add quantitative tissue-stiffness measurement to your conventional testicular ultrasound. Testicular SWE is used as an adjunct to standard ultrasound, clinical history and tumour markers where relevant — not as a replacement for urgent urology referral when suspicious findings are present.

Testicular SWE is a private ultrasound elastography add-on that measures testicular tissue stiffness in kilopascals (kPa). It is used alongside conventional testicular ultrasound to support assessment of selected scrotal symptoms, focal testicular changes, indeterminate lesions, inflammation, previous ultrasound findings and some fertility-related pathways. At London Private Ultrasound, Testicular SWE is available at 27 Welbeck Street in the Harley Street medical district. Testicular ultrasound + Testicular SWE is priced at £499, and standalone Testicular SWE is priced at £359 when a recent suitable testicular ultrasound is already available.
Private Testicular SWE at London Private Ultrasound is a specialist ultrasound add-on that measures testicular tissue stiffness in kilopascals (kPa). It is performed during a conventional testicular ultrasound on the specialist ultrasound elastography system at 27 Welbeck Street, London W1G 8EN. The bundled testicular ultrasound + SWE appointment costs £499; standalone Testicular SWE is £359 if you have had a recent conventional testicular ultrasound elsewhere. SWE may support the assessment of testicular lesions or tissue changes, but it does not diagnose testicular cancer and does not replace tumour-marker blood tests, urgent urology referral, surgical exploration or histology where indicated.

Conventional testicular ultrasound assesses testis size, focal lesions, vascularity, internal echo pattern, epididymis, hydrocele, varicocele and scrotal soft tissues. SWE adds numerical stiffness data in kPa. This can provide additional information in selected cases, but conventional ultrasound remains the central test.
The kPa measurement is interpreted alongside lesion size, margins, echogenicity, vascularity and clinical history.
May support characterisation of tissue stiffness in focal lesions, inflammation, fibrosis or infertility-related assessment, where clinically appropriate.
Where conventional ultrasound identifies an area that needs further characterisation.
As an add-on to conventional ultrasound assessment of scrotal symptoms.
Where additional quantitative stiffness information may help support interpretation.
May add information in selected cases where inflammation or tissue change is suspected.
Can be one component of a wider infertility assessment, alongside semen analysis and hormonal tests.
May help track tissue stiffness over time where repeat assessment is clinically appropriate.
Testicular SWE can add a quantitative stiffness measurement in kPa, which may support ultrasound interpretation when combined with lesion morphology, vascularity, symptoms and prior imaging.
It cannot diagnose cancer, exclude cancer with certainty, replace tumour-marker blood tests, replace urology review, or replace surgery or histology when indicated.
Upon arrival, your consultant will have a short clinical chat regarding your symptoms, history, and any previous urology tests or scans.
You will be asked to undress from the waist down and lie comfortably on the examination couch. A chaperone is available upon request, and you always maintain the right to pause or stop the scan.
Warm gel is applied to the scrotum. The consultant conducts a thorough conventional testicular ultrasound, then switches the machine into SWE mode to measure tissue stiffness (kPa).
Once complete, the consultant will wipe away the gel and explain the findings to you verbally in the scan room, providing immediate clarity before your written report arrives.
We believe in transparent safety-netting. Here is what happens depending on your scan findings:
Findings typical of benign epididymal cysts, mild hydrocele, or normal tissue. We provide reassurance, lifestyle guidance, and recommend routine checks if symptoms change.
If ultrasound and SWE reveal complex cysts, significant varicoceles, or unusual stiffness, we issue a graded report and advise sharing this with your GP or a urologist for further assessment.
If a solid mass or suspicious vascularity is identified, we formulate an urgent referral letter directly for your GP or a private clinic to ensure rapid 2-week-wait specialist assessment.
For emergencies such as testicular torsion or severe acute infection, we will direct you to call 999 or attend A&E immediately to preserve testicular health.
Book online, by phone or WhatsApp. No GP referral is required.
Before the scan begins, a short conversation confirms the scan booked is the right one for your needs to ensure maximum clinical value.
Attend our Central London clinic in the Harley Street medical district.
The consultant performs a conventional testicular/scrotal ultrasound first, followed by the SWE measurement during the same appointment.
Findings are explained verbally at the time, with the written report sent within 24 hours.
Based on findings, the clinician provides clear recommendations for reassurance, timeline for rescan, or onward care with your GP or urologist.
Testicular SWE can add quantitative tissue-stiffness data to conventional testicular ultrasound, but the result must be interpreted with symptoms, clinical history, greyscale ultrasound findings, Doppler vascularity and tumour markers where relevant.
Testicular SWE may support assessment of selected focal lesions, inflammatory changes, fibrosis-related tissue changes or follow-up comparisons when clinically appropriate.
Testicular SWE does not diagnose testicular cancer, exclude cancer with certainty, or replace tumour-marker blood tests, urgent urology referral, surgery or histology where indicated.

It is a quantitative ultrasound technique that measures tissue stiffness in kilopascals. The measurement is taken during a conventional testicular ultrasound and interpreted alongside standard ultrasound findings.
A conventional testicular ultrasound is £219. Testicular ultrasound plus SWE is £499. Standalone Testicular SWE is £359 if you have already had a recent conventional testicular ultrasound elsewhere.
No. SWE is an adjunct. The conventional ultrasound remains central because it assesses size, morphology, vascularity, focal lesions, epididymis, hydrocele, varicocele and other scrotal structures.
No. SWE cannot diagnose cancer by itself. It provides supportive stiffness data that must be interpreted with conventional ultrasound, clinical context and tumour markers where relevant.
No. If conventional ultrasound findings suggest a suspicious lesion, urgent urology referral is required. SWE should not be used to delay or avoid specialist assessment.
The kPa value reflects tissue stiffness. Higher stiffness may be relevant in some published research, but there is no universal threshold that confirms or excludes malignancy.
LPU uses the specialist ultrasound elastography system, specialist ultrasound elastography technology.
No GP referral is required. You can book directly online, by phone or via WhatsApp.
It can be one component of a wider infertility assessment, alongside conventional ultrasound, semen analysis, hormone testing and specialist fertility review. It is not a standalone fertility test.
Testicular SWE is available at 27 Welbeck Street, London W1G 8EN. It is not currently available at St Albans.
Most appointments take around 20–30 minutes, including conventional testicular ultrasound and the SWE measurement.
