Same-day verbal results, same-day GP review. Designed for men with testicular concerns, suspected lumps, scrotal pain or swelling, fertility concerns, or STI screening needs. Same-day appointments. STD Quad Detail

What’s in the STD Quad Screen

A four-test panel covering the most common sexually transmitted infections — combining blood serology and urine PCR for highest diagnostic accuracy. Aligned with BASHH (British Association for Sexual Health and HIV) guidelines.

HIV 1&2 / p24 Antigen

Fourth-generation combined antibody/antigen blood test — detects HIV from approximately 2-4 weeks post-exposure. Highly sensitive and specific.

  • Detects HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies
  • Plus p24 antigen (early infection)
  • Window period: ~2-4 weeks
  • Confirmatory testing if positive

Syphilis (IgG/IgM)

Combined IgG and IgM antibody blood test — detects both recent and past syphilis infection. Treponemal antibody test, the standard screening method.

  • Combined IgG + IgM detection
  • Detects recent and past infection
  • Window period: 3-6 weeks
  • Treatment with penicillin if positive

Chlamydia trachomatis

Urine PCR test for the most common bacterial STI in the UK. PCR is the most sensitive method — far superior to older culture-based tests.

  • Urine PCR (most sensitive)
  • Often asymptomatic in men
  • Can cause epididymitis if untreated
  • Treatment with azithromycin or doxycycline

Neisseria gonorrhoea

Urine PCR test for gonorrhoea — the second most common bacterial STI. Often co-infects with chlamydia. Increasingly antibiotic-resistant.

  • Urine PCR (most sensitive)
  • Often co-infects with chlamydia
  • Can cause urethritis, epididymitis
  • Treatment per current BASHH guidelines

UKAS Accredited Lab

All samples processed at our partner UKAS-accredited laboratory — ensuring highest standards of quality assurance and result accuracy.

  • UKAS accredited (ISO 15189)
  • Results within 1-3 working days
  • Confidential results delivery

Scan Coverage

What’s Assessed in the Testis Ultrasound

Comprehensive 20-minute non-invasive ultrasound — the gold-standard imaging test for testicular concerns. Painless and requires no preparation.

Testicular Structure

Both testes assessed for size, shape, echotexture, and homogeneity. Symmetrical comparison between left and right. Normal testicle has uniform echotexture.

Lumps and Masses

Most concerning finding for testicular cancer. Detected as solid intratesticular lesions. Requires urgent specialist referral. Approximately 95% of testicular masses identified as tumours per ultrasound are confirmed at surgery.

Cysts (Benign)

Common benign findings: epididymal cysts, spermatocele (sperm-containing cysts), and tunica albuginea cysts. Generally don’t require treatment unless symptomatic.

Varicocele

Varicocele — enlarged veins in the spermatic cord. Common cause of male infertility. Identified by Doppler flow analysis. Most common on the left side.

Hydrocele

Hydrocele — fluid collection around the testicle. Common, usually benign, but can mask underlying testicular pathology. Doppler distinguishes from varicocele.

Inflammation

Epididymitis (epididymis inflammation) and orchitis (testicular inflammation) — typically associated with infection. Doppler shows increased blood flow. Often related to STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea).

Self-Examination Guide

How to Perform Testicular Self-Examination

Monthly self-examination is recommended for all men aged 15+. Combined with prompt ultrasound when concerns arise, it forms the gold-standard testicular cancer screening pathway. Takes only 1-2 minutes.

1. Best Time

After a warm bath or shower — when scrotal skin is most relaxed. Stand in front of a mirror.

2. Visual Check

Look for any swelling, asymmetry, or skin changes. Mild size differences between testes are normal.

3. Examine Each Testicle

Roll each testicle gently between thumb and fingers. Use both hands. The testicle should feel smooth, firm but not hard.

4. Feel for Lumps

Any hard lumps, bumps, or hard areas — particularly painless ones — warrant prompt assessment.

5. Identify the Epididymis

The epididymis is a soft, rope-like structure on the back of each testicle — this is normal anatomy, not a lump.

6. When Concerned

Any new lump, hard area, size change, or persistent ache warrants prompt assessment with ultrasound — book the same-day Testis Health Check.

Reminder: Most testicular lumps are benign (cysts, varicocele, hydrocele) — but testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-35 and is highly curable with early detection. If in doubt, get it checked. Same-day appointments typically available.

Who Should Book

Who is the Testis Health Check For?

Recommended for men of all ages — particularly young men 15-35 (testicular cancer peak incidence), those with concerns, and those wanting comprehensive baseline men’s health assessment.

Young men aged 15-35

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in this age group. Self-examination plus ultrasound when concerns arise is the gold-standard screening pathway.

Suspected testicular lump

Any new lump, hard area, or change felt during self-examination requires prompt assessment. Most are benign, but early detection of cancer is critical.

Testicular pain or discomfort

Persistent testicular pain — not severe enough for emergency assessment — warrants ultrasound to identify causes including epididymitis, varicocele, or other conditions.

Scrotal swelling

Scrotal swelling can indicate hydrocele, varicocele, hernia, or other conditions. Ultrasound differentiates these and guides management.

Recent sexual exposure

Men with recent unprotected sexual exposure — STD Quad covers the four most common STIs (HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea).

Fertility concerns

Suspected varicocele (common cause of male infertility) or other testicular causes of subfertility — ultrasound identifies and grades varicocele.

Family history of testicular cancer

Family history (brother or father) increases testicular cancer risk. Annual ultrasound surveillance may be appropriate.

Comprehensive baseline

Men wanting comprehensive baseline men’s health screening including imaging, STI screen, GP review, and Pharmacist medication review.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Comprehensive answers about the Testis Health Check.

What is the Testis Health Check?

The Testis Health Check is a same-day men’s health assessment combining 4 components in a single visit:

  1. Testis Ultrasound Scan — £219 standalone
  2. STD Quad (HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea — Urine PCR + Serology) — £165 standalone
  3. 30-minute GP Consultation — £150 standalone
  4. Pharmacist medication review — £50 standalone

Bundle price £549 — saves £35 vs £584 standalone. Total visit time approximately 60-90 minutes. Same-day verbal scan results, ultrasound report within 24 hours.

How much does the Testis Health Check cost in London?

£549 all-inclusive at London Private Ultrasound. Standalone components cost £584 separately, so the bundle saves £35.

Component prices:

  • Testis Ultrasound Scan: £219
  • STD Quad: £165
  • 30-minute GP Consultation: £150
  • Pharmacist medication review: £50
What is in the STD Quad blood test?

The STD Quad combines blood serology and urine PCR for the four most common sexually transmitted infections:

  • Serology (Blood):
  • HIV 1&2/p24 Antigen
  • Syphilis IgG/IgM
  • Urine PCR:
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Neisseria gonorrhoea

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is the most sensitive test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. Results within 1-3 working days from UKAS-accredited laboratory. Aligned with BASHH guidelines.

What does the Testis Ultrasound assess?

The Testis Ultrasound is a non-invasive scan of both testes, scrotum, and surrounding structures:

  • Testicular lumps and masses (most concerning for cancer)
  • Cysts (epididymal, hydrocele, spermatocele)
  • Varicocele (enlarged scrotal veins — common male infertility cause)
  • Hydrocele (fluid around the testicle)
  • Inflammation (epididymitis, orchitis)
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Testicular torsion (urgent finding requiring surgery)

Scan takes approximately 20 minutes, painless. Same-day verbal results, written report typically within 24 hours.

Is this a screening test for testicular cancer?

Yes — the testis ultrasound is the gold-standard imaging test for assessing testicular lumps and detecting testicular cancer.

Important note: Tumour markers like AFP, beta-HCG, and LDH are NOT used to screen for testicular cancer in healthy men — they are used for diagnosis confirmation and staging when cancer is already suspected.

The best testicular cancer screening combines:

  • Self-examination (monthly, recommended for men 15+)
  • Ultrasound when concerns arise

This package provides the ultrasound — same-day, with specialist clinical review.

Are tumour markers (AFP, beta-HCG, LDH) included?

No — tumour markers are not included as standard, by design.

  • AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein), beta-HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), and LDH are used for diagnosis confirmation and staging of testicular cancer when cancer is already suspected
  • NOT for screening healthy men
  • They miss many germ cell tumours when used in isolation
  • NICE guidance does not recommend them for asymptomatic screening

The gold-standard testicular cancer screening is self-examination plus ultrasound (already included in this package).

If a suspicious lump is detected on ultrasound, tumour markers can be added for diagnostic workup if clinically indicated.

Who should book this assessment?

Recommended for:

  • Young men aged 15-35 (testicular cancer most common in this age group)
  • Men with testicular lumps or swelling (urgent assessment needed)
  • Men with testicular pain or discomfort
  • Men with fertility concerns or suspected varicocele
  • Men with recent sexual exposure wanting STI screening
  • Men with symptoms of UTI or STI
  • Men with family history of testicular cancer
  • Men wanting comprehensive baseline men’s health assessment
Why is everything done in one visit?

Testicular concerns — particularly suspected lumps — are anxiety-driven. Same-day pathway delivers peace of mind same-day.

All 4 components delivered in a single 60-90 minute visit:

  • Ultrasound + STD Quad sample collection
  • Same-day GP review with immediate clinical interpretation
  • Pharmacist medication review (if STI treatment needed)
  • Onward referral if needed

STD Quad results follow within 1-3 working days from UKAS-accredited laboratory.

How can I do testicular self-examination?

Testicular self-examination is recommended monthly for men aged 15+. Best done after a warm bath or shower when scrotal skin is relaxed.

  1. Roll each testicle gently between thumb and fingers
  2. Feel for any lumps or hard areas
  3. Check for size differences between testicles
  4. Note any tenderness or changes
  5. The epididymis (soft, rope-like structure on the back of each testicle) is normal anatomy

Any concerning findings warrant prompt assessment with ultrasound. NHS provides detailed self-examination guides at nhs.uk/conditions/testicular-cancer.

Do I need a GP referral?

No GP referral required. You can book directly through our online calendar, by phone on 020 7101 3377, or via WhatsApp/SMS to 07414 165515.

Are same-day appointments available?

Yes — same-day appointments are typically available, including weekends. Our clinics are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm.

The Testis Health Check is specifically designed as a same-day pathway. Total visit time approximately 60-90 minutes for all 4 components.

What conditions does the assessment detect?

The assessment can detect:

  • Testicular cancer (germ cell tumours)
  • Benign testicular masses
  • Epididymal cysts
  • Spermatocele (sperm-containing cysts)
  • Hydrocele (fluid around the testicle)
  • Varicocele (enlarged veins)
  • Epididymitis (inflammation of epididymis)
  • Orchitis (inflammation of testes)
  • Testicular torsion (surgical emergency)
  • Inguinal hernia
  • Sexually transmitted infections — HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea
What if you find something abnormal?

If your assessment identifies findings requiring specialist input, the same-day GP appointment discusses next steps:

  • Suspicious lumps suggesting cancer — urgent urology referral with same-day formal report supporting NHS GP or private urologist referral
  • STIs identified — treated promptly per BASHH guidelines (typically same-day prescription via Pharmacist)
  • Severe testicular pain or suspected torsion — requires immediate emergency assessment, call 999
What if testicular torsion is suspected?

⚠️ Testicular torsion is a surgical emergency — the testicle twists, cutting off blood supply.

Symptoms include:

  • Sudden severe testicular pain
  • Scrotal swelling
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • The testicle may appear higher and at a strange angle

If torsion is suspected, call 999 or attend A&E immediately — surgery within 6 hours saves the testicle. Do NOT wait for the Testis Health Check.

For non-acute pain assessment, our same-day pathway is appropriate.
