What is Comprehensive Ovarian Screening?

At London Private Ultrasound, our Comprehensive Ovarian Screening is a proactive health package for women seeking clarity and reassurance. By combining state-of-the-art imaging with a comprehensive blood profile, we provide a holistic overview that empowers you with knowledge.

About Ovarian Cancer: Taking a Proactive Step

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as a "silent killer" because symptoms can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions. While it is rare, early detection is key to a positive outcome.

Key Symptoms to Be Aware Of:

  • Persistent bloating or swelling in the abdomen.
  • Feeling full quickly, even after eating very little.
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain.
  • Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation.

Risk Factors: While a family history of ovarian or breast cancer is a significant risk factor, other factors include age and genetic predispositions. Proactive screening is an essential tool for those with increased risk or concerning symptoms.

Why Scanning Matters for Ovarian Cancer

An ultrasound scan is a critical component of ovarian cancer screening because it provides a visual, structural overview of the ovaries and other pelvic organs. Unlike blood tests alone, a high-resolution ultrasound can identify and characterise masses, cysts, and other abnormalities that may not be detected otherwise. Our expert sonographers use advanced imaging to provide detailed insights that complement your blood work, offering a more complete picture of your health.

What's Included in My Screening?

Price: £575

  • Expert GP Consultation Your package includes a dedicated consultation with a private GP, scheduled for the first Friday after your visit. The GP will professionally review your ultrasound and blood test results, discuss any concerns you may have, and provide clear recommendations for any next steps or referrals if needed.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound Scan This non-invasive scan is performed in-house by our experienced female sonographers. We provide immediate verbal feedback, followed by a detailed radiology report within 24 hours. The scan includes a transabdominal and/or transvaginal assessment of:
Ovaries: To check for cysts, masses, or indicators of conditions like PCOS.
Uterus: To examine for fibroids or endometrial changes.
Pelvic Structures: To screen for any free fluid or structural abnormalities.
  • Comprehensive Blood Profile Our extensive blood panel provides a broad overview of your general health and organ function. We screen for 24 biomarkers, including those for:
    Infection & Inflammation: FBC, ESR
Kidney Function: Urea, Electrolytes, Creatinine, eGFR
Liver Function: ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, Bilirubin, Albumin, Globulin
Metabolic Health: Glucose, Triglycerides, Cholesterol, Iron
  • CA 125 – Ovarian Cancer Health Indicator This is a key blood marker measured to provide valuable insights into your ovarian health. While elevated levels may be linked to conditions such as ovarian cancer, they can also be a sign of other non-cancerous conditions, including endometriosis or uterine fibroids. This marker is an essential tool for your GP, who will interpret its levels alongside your ultrasound and other test results to give you a complete and accurate overview.
  •  C-Reactive Protein (CRP) marker
This test measures the level of inflammation in your body. While not specific to a single condition, elevated CRP can indicate the presence of active inflammation, which is common in conditions like endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Your GP will use this information to build a more complete picture of your overall health and to help guide any necessary next steps.

Why Does This Approach Matter?

Our position as a leader in diagnostic care is built on a multi-faceted approach. We go beyond a single test by combining three key elements for a complete assessment:

  1. Expert Ultrasound: To provide a visual, structural overview.
  2. Blood Markers: To provide insight into your internal health.
  3. Medical Interpretation: All results are reviewed by a private GP who provides professional context and a clear pathway forward.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is this a definitive test for ovarian cancer? A: No. This package is a screening tool designed to provide a comprehensive overview of your health and assess your risk factors. It combines multiple tests that, when viewed together by a GP, offer valuable insights for proactive health management. For a definitive diagnosis, further testing may be required.

Q: What is the purpose of the CA 125 and CRP tests? A: CA 125 is a key biomarker for ovarian health, but elevated levels can also be caused by other conditions like endometriosis. The C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test screens for active inflammation. These markers provide valuable information for your GP, especially when interpreted alongside your ultrasound and other results.

Q: What if my results are abnormal? A: The GP consultation is the most crucial part of this package. If any of your results are abnormal, the GP will explain the findings to you in detail and recommend a clear, professional pathway for follow-up care.

Q: How is this different from an NHS scan? A: Our service provides swift, same-day access to expert-led scans and comprehensive blood tests. All results are professionally reviewed by a GP with immediate feedback, ensuring you get clear answers and next steps without the anxiety of long waiting times.

Q: Does having a family history mean I will get ovarian cancer? A: No. While a family history of ovarian or breast cancer is a significant risk factor, it does not mean you will develop the disease. A screening package is simply a proactive tool to monitor your health and provide you with peace of mind.

Q: What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic test? A: A screening test is performed on a healthy person to check for a disease or risk factors before symptoms appear. A diagnostic test is performed to confirm or rule out a suspected disease in someone who is already experiencing symptoms.

Q: How should I prepare for my pelvic ultrasound scan? A: To prepare for your scan, please ensure your bladder is full. This helps to get a clearer image during the scan. Please do not urinate for one hour before your appointment. You may also be advised to eat and drink normally before your scan.

Q: Are there any risks associated with the scan? A: No. Ultrasound scans use high-frequency sound waves, not radiation. They are considered a safe and non-invasive procedure with no known risks.
