A fertility assessment scan is a thorough gynecological ultrasound evaluation of your pelvic organs, including the womb, the lining of the womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding structures. At London Private Ultrasound, we perform this scan typically in the initial stage of the menstrual cycle, usually on day five and sometimes as early as day two, a procedure often referred to as a baseline scan.
Purpose of the Fertility Assessment Scan
The primary goal of the fertility assessment scan is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the pelvis, ovaries, uterus, and the lining of the womb (endometrium). This detailed examination is crucial for:
- Pelvic Assessment: Evaluating the overall health and structure of the pelvic organs.
- Ovarian Health: Checking the size, shape, and condition of the ovaries.
- Uterine Evaluation: Assessing the uterus for any abnormalities, such as fibroids or polyps.
- Endometrial Thickness: Measuring the thickness of the endometrium, which is vital for implantation during fertility treatments.
This scan is particularly important before starting a treatment cycle for various fertility procedures, including IVF, embryo transfer, donor eggs, donor sperm, IUI, and even in natural cycles without any medical intervention.
Monitoring Your Cycle and Treatment Response
Following the baseline scan, we continue to monitor the progress of your natural cycle to predict the time of ovulation for natural conception. Regular scans are essential during treatment cycles to check how your body is responding to the fertility treatment. This ongoing monitoring helps your fertility center or GP to:
- Adjust Treatment Plans: Based on how your body responds, your treatment plan can be adjusted to improve outcomes.
- Optimize Ovulation Timing: For natural conception or timing fertility treatments, accurately predicting ovulation is crucial.
- Evaluate Treatment Efficacy: Regular scans ensure that the treatment is progressing as expected and allows for timely interventions if necessary.
This type of scan will also rule out any structural cause that might explain difficulty conceiving, recurrent miscarriages, generalized pelvic pain, or any other related issues. We will also count how many follicles are visible at the beginning of the cycle within each ovary (antral follicular count), and comment on the accessibility of the ovaries for better planning of the upcoming IVF egg retrieval procedure.
