How It Works
- Ultrasound Imaging: Traditional ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. A transducer (probe) emits sound waves that bounce off tissues, organs, and blood vessels. The returning sound waves are captured by the transducer and converted into images displayed on a monitor.
- Doppler Ultrasound: This technology is specifically used to visualize blood flow within the vessels. It can detect the speed and direction of blood flow by measuring the change in frequency of the returning sound waves (Doppler effect) as they bounce off moving blood cells.
Uses
- In Women: It is often used to assess organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. Common indications include evaluating the cause of pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy. It is also used in fertility assessments and monitoring the health and development of a pregnancy.
- In Men: It may be used to evaluate issues related to the bladder, prostate, and seminal vesicles, including the assessment of prostate enlargement, tumors, or blockages affecting fertility.
- Blood Flow Analysis: For both genders, it’s crucial for examining blood flow in pelvic vessels to identify any abnormalities like clots or stenosis (narrowing of blood vessels) that could lead to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis or chronic pelvic pain.
