More Information

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is not routinely offered at NHS Hospitals in UK, with a few exceptions. This is commonly the first scan in most women’s pregnancies, therefore it is essential at this stage to:
  • Establish accurate estimated date of delivery (EDD)
  • Establish if you are carrying one baby or twins
  • Determine the risk for 3 main chromosomal abnormalities: Down’s Syndrome (T21), Edward’s Syndrome (T18), and Patau’s Syndrome (T13) with 99% accuracy in as little as 1-3 business days! You also have a choice to have a more enhanced screening for fetal abnormalities that this test offers.
  • You can find out the gender of your baby as early as 10 weeks!
  • Perform a mini-anatomy survey for your baby, as many of the major abnormalities would be identifiable at this stage.
  • Identify any incidental findings that may impact the mode of delivery and improve antenatal care (e.g. identify and describe location and size of fibroids)
You may also wish to perform this test in case of already received high risk results from the Combined Screening Test, at your NHS antenatal care provider or privately.
  • You will be asked a series of questions related to your menstrual dates or assisted conception dates and symptoms you are presenting with
  • Perform the Ultrasound scan and take high quality representative images followed by a blood test from your arm.
  • Explain ultrasound findings and answer your questions or concerns within our scope of practice
  • Issue a hard copy of the report at the end of the scan, as well as issue a digital copy of the report within 24 hrs, containing relevant images for you to keep for your records, or take to your GP and / or antenatal care provider
  • Perform a blood test, which analyses the foetal cell-free DNA fragments within maternal blood stream
  • Recommend a follow-up ultrasound scan if necessary
  • Offer GP or specialist referral if deemed necessary
The most common finding at this stage is a normally developing baby with normal appearances for this stage of gestation. On a rare occasion, other findings could be detected, such as miscarriage or a structural abnormality. Once the blood test results are available, you will know with 99% accuracy the chances for your baby to have most common trisomies, i.e. Down’s Syndrome (T21), Edward’s Syndrome (T18), and Patau’s Syndrome (T13) or other really rare chromosomal abnormalities, microdeletion syndromes, or single gene level genetic deviations. You can find more information about the screening and support services for Down’s Syndrome (T21), Edward’s Syndrome (T18), and Patau’s Syndrome (T13) below:
You will have a non-invasive blood test performed, which analyses the foetal cell-free DNA fragments within maternal blood stream: free ß-hCG and PAPP-A.
Similarly to Nuchal Translucency Scan, NIPT scan is performed transabdominally (on top of your tummy), for which you will need a pre-prepared full bladder (finish drinking 0.75-1L of water about 1 hr before your appointment time). You will be able to empty your bladder right after the scan.
The Ultrasound Specialist will explain the procedure before your scan. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your tummy, so that the specialist will be able to produce high quality diagnostic ultrasound images and assess your baby. You will not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan, aside for the discomfort of your full bladder. NIPT Scan is regularly completed within 15-20 minutes, depending on the position of your baby. Our Sonographer will recommend the best course of action depending on the ultrasound scan findings. After the scan you will be guided to have your blood test taken.
You will get the results of the scan after the examination along with a hard copy of the report. We will also email you a digital copy of the report with relevant images within 24 hrs. The results of the blood test will be available within as 7-10 business days.
Ultrasound scan itself and the blood test do not harm the pregnancy. Yours and your baby’s safety is one of our top priorities, therefore we strictly adhere to BMUS guidelines for the safe use of Diagnostic Ultrasound Equipment and scanning times, as well as respect ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
We recommend our Ultimate Value Package; Please ask your sonographer NIPT

Fantastic ultrasound centre, the sonographer Ashleigh Austin was very knowledgeable and kind. The cost is half of that of Harley Street too. I had a query and she called me immediately to respond to my concerns. Highly recommended
