What is a private heart health check?
A comprehensive cardiovascular screening combining heart ultrasound, electrical activity testing, blood biomarkers, and clinical interpretation by a GP — all in one visit.
A private heart health check is a comprehensive cardiovascular assessment designed to detect heart disease, identify cardiovascular risk factors, and establish a baseline of heart function — often before symptoms develop.
Unlike a basic GP check (typically blood pressure and cholesterol only), our private heart packages include all the imaging and biomarker tests recommended by cardiology specialists for thorough evaluation. Our packages combine four core components:
- Echocardiogram — ultrasound imaging of the heart’s chambers, valves, and pumping function
- ECG (electrocardiogram) — 12-lead recording of the heart’s electrical activity
- Cardiac blood biomarkers — cholesterol panel, glucose, HbA1c, kidney function, and (in higher tiers) inflammatory and cardiac-specific markers
- GP consultation (Plus tier and above) — face-to-face review of all findings with personalised cardiovascular risk assessment
Higher-tier packages add carotid artery ultrasound (Premium and Diamond) for stroke risk assessment and abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (Diamond) for early detection of a potentially fatal vascular condition.
The result is a complete cardiovascular picture — covering structural heart health, electrical rhythm, blood flow, biochemistry, and clinical interpretation — in a single coordinated appointment.

Who should consider a heart health check?
A private cardiac screening is appropriate for any adult wanting baseline assessment, those with risk factors, family history, or specific symptoms.
Adults aged 40+
Cardiovascular risk rises sharply after age 40. A baseline echocardiogram and ECG provides reference values for future comparisons and identifies silent risk factors.
Family History
If a parent or sibling had heart disease, stroke, or sudden cardiac death — particularly before age 55 (men) or 65 (women) — your risk is significantly elevated.
Hypertension or Diabetes
Both conditions damage heart and blood vessels silently. Regular cardiac screening identifies early structural changes before symptoms appear.
Raised Cholesterol
High cholesterol drives atherosclerosis. Carotid ultrasound (Premium tier and above) detects plaque buildup before stroke or heart attack.
Smokers / Former Smokers
Tobacco use accelerates cardiovascular damage. AAA screening (Diamond tier) is particularly important — smoking is the single largest risk factor.
Symptom Investigation
Chest discomfort, palpitations, breathlessness on exertion, dizziness, or fainting — all warrant prompt cardiac assessment with echo + ECG.
Executives & Athletes
High-performance individuals dependent on sustained physical and cognitive output. Cardiac screening identifies silent issues before they affect performance.
Pre-Employment Medical
Some employers require cardiac assessment for high-risk roles (aviation, offshore, emergency services). All our packages provide formal medical reports.

How does the heart health check appointment work?
Step-by-step process from booking to integrated report. All packages follow the same pathway — duration varies by tier.
Book online or by phone
Choose your package and book through the secure online booking calendar, call 020 7101 3377, or message via WhatsApp. No GP referral required.
Arrival and check-in
Arrive at our Harley Street or St Albans clinic. Brief medical history review and confirmation of any preparation requirements (typically none for cardiac checks).
Echocardiogram
Our specialist Vascular Scientist performs the echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) using premium equipment. Verbal findings discussed live during the scan. Painless, no radiation, ~20-30 minutes.
ECG and blood tests
12-lead ECG performed in clinic (5 minutes). Blood sample taken and sent to our partner laboratory for cardiac biomarker analysis. Results typically returned within 24-48 hours.
Carotid arteries (Premium and Diamond)
Bilateral carotid Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow and detects atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries supplying the brain — key stroke risk indicator.
Abdominal aorta (Diamond only)
Abdominal aortic ultrasound measures the aorta to detect aneurysm — a silent but potentially fatal condition particularly important for men aged 60+ and smokers.
GP consultation (Plus tier and above)
Face-to-face consultation with our Medical Director reviewing all findings, discussing risk factors, and developing your personalised cardiovascular plan with lifestyle and treatment recommendations.
Integrated written report
Comprehensive written report combining echocardiogram findings, ECG, blood biomarkers, GP interpretation, and (where applicable) carotid and AAA results — delivered as a single coherent document within 3-5 working days.
The case for proactive cardiac screening
Cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 4 UK deaths. Most cardiac events are predictable and preventable when risk factors are identified early.
UK adults living with CVD
Cardiovascular disease causes a quarter of all UK deaths. Early detection of risk factors saves lives.
Source: British Heart FoundationAdults with hypertension
“Silent killer” — most don’t know they have high blood pressure until complications occur.
Source: NHS UKOf strokes are preventable
Most strokes are prevented through risk factor management — particularly hypertension, atherosclerosis, and atrial fibrillation.
Source: Stroke AssociationOf heart attacks are silent
Many myocardial infarctions occur without classic chest pain. ECG and biomarker screening detects evidence after the event.
Source: NICE NG185What’s the difference between an echocardiogram and an ECG?
Both tests assess the heart — but in fundamentally different ways. They are complementary, not interchangeable. All our heart packages include both.
Echocardiogram (Echo)Heart ultrasound — visualises structure
Uses ultrasound waves to create real-time images of the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and pumping function. Painless, non-invasive, no radiation.
Detects:
- Valve disease (stenosis, regurgitation)
- Heart muscle weakness / cardiomyopathy
- Heart failure (reduced ejection fraction)
- Wall thickness changes (hypertrophy)
- Pericardial effusion (fluid around heart)
- Congenital heart defects
- Cardiac chamber enlargement
ECG (Electrocardiogram)Electrical activity recording
Uses 12 electrodes on chest and limbs to measure the heart’s electrical signals. Painless, takes ~5 minutes. Provides snapshot of rhythm and electrical conduction.
Detects:
- Arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation, etc.)
- Heart block / conduction abnormalities
- Evidence of past heart attack
- Signs of ischaemia (reduced blood flow)
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Heart strain patterns
- Pacemaker function
In short: Echo shows what the heart looks like; ECG shows how it conducts electricity. Together they provide a complete cardiac picture — which is why all our packages include both.

Frequently asked questions about private heart health checks
Comprehensive answers to the questions we hear most often. For specific package details, visit each package page directly.
What is a private heart health check?
A private heart health check is a comprehensive cardiovascular screening combining echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), ECG (electrocardiogram), cardiac blood biomarkers, and (in higher tiers) GP consultation. London Private Ultrasound offers 4 packages from £449 to £1,220, designed to detect cardiovascular disease risk, hypertension impact, atherosclerosis, valve issues, and arrhythmias before symptoms develop.
How much does a private heart check cost in London?
At London Private Ultrasound, heart health check packages range from £449 to £1,220:
- Heart Health Check (£449) — Echo + ECG + cardiac bloods
- Heart Plus (£685) — adds GP consultation
- Heart Premium (£995) — adds carotid arteries (stroke risk)
- Heart Diamond (£1,220) — adds AAA screening + full cardiac panel
All prices all-inclusive — no hidden fees. Optional add-ons available on each package page.
Do I need a GP referral for a private heart check?
No — none of our 4 heart health check packages require a GP referral. You can book directly through our online calendar, by phone on 020 7101 3377, or via WhatsApp. Same-day appointments typically available.
What is the difference between an echocardiogram and an ECG?
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to image the heart’s structure — chambers, valves, and pumping function. An ECG (electrocardiogram) measures the heart’s electrical activity to detect rhythm abnormalities, arrhythmias, and signs of past heart attack.
Both tests are complementary, not interchangeable — they assess different aspects of cardiac function. Our heart packages include both. See our Echo vs ECG section above for full details.
Which heart package should I choose?
Choose based on your specific concerns:
- Heart Health Check (£449) — basic cardiac baseline if you have no risk factors
- Heart Plus (£685) — if you want GP interpretation and personalised plan
- Heart Premium (£995) — if you also want stroke risk assessment via carotid arteries
- Heart Diamond (£1,220) — most comprehensive, includes AAA screening for men aged 60+
Use the Decision Helper above for a personalised recommendation.
Who should consider a private heart health check?
Adults aged 40+ wanting a baseline cardiovascular assessment, anyone with family history of heart disease or stroke, those with hypertension, diabetes, raised cholesterol, smokers/former smokers, executives wanting comprehensive screening, and anyone experiencing chest discomfort, palpitations, or breathlessness on exertion.
How long does a heart health check take?
Duration varies by package:
- Heart Health Check (£449) — ~45-60 minutes
- Heart Plus (£685) — ~75-90 minutes
- Heart Premium (£995) — ~90 minutes
- Heart Diamond (£1,220) — ~2 hours
All packages include same-day verbal results and an integrated written report within 3-5 working days.
Are same-day appointments available?
Yes — same-day appointments are typically available for all 4 heart packages, including weekends. Our clinics are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm. Call 020 7101 3377 to check availability.
Is private heart screening covered by insurance?
Some private medical insurance policies cover diagnostic imaging and blood tests with prior authorisation. Coverage varies by insurer and policy. We provide invoices and clinical reports suitable for insurance claims.
Contact your insurer directly to confirm coverage. Self-pay options available for all packages.
What happens if you find something concerning?
If your heart health check identifies a finding requiring specialist input, we generate a same-day formal referral letter to your NHS GP or to a private cardiologist of your choice — at no additional charge.
The referral is significantly stronger because it includes echocardiogram imaging, ECG, blood biomarkers, and GP interpretation — meaning your specialist appointment is more productive from the first visit.
Where are your clinics?
We have two clinic locations:
- Central London — 27 Welbeck Street, W1G 8EN — in the Harley Street medical district
- St Albans — 54-56 Victoria Street, AL1 3HZ
Both clinics offer all 4 heart health check packages.
Can a heart check predict a future heart attack?
No single test can predict a heart attack with certainty. However, a comprehensive heart check identifies key risk factors — atherosclerosis (via carotid scan), valve abnormalities, structural changes, electrical rhythm issues, and biomarker patterns — that significantly raise heart attack risk.
Early detection enables preventive intervention through lifestyle changes, medication, or specialist referral. Approximately 50% of heart attacks are silent, and screening can identify evidence of past events that may have gone unnoticed.
Is the echocardiogram painful?
No — an echocardiogram is completely painless and non-invasive. A small probe with ultrasound gel is moved across the chest. There is no radiation. The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes. Some patients feel slight pressure from the probe, but this is not painful.
How does this compare to non-private heart screening?
The standard non-private pathway does not offer routine heart screening for asymptomatic adults. The free national health check (age 40-74) includes blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risk — but does not include echocardiogram, ECG, or carotid scan.
Our private heart packages provide all of these tests with same-day appointments and same-day verbal results, where non-private specialist cardiac assessment can take weeks to months. See our comparison table above for details.
